Loss of emulsion area?
Modifying apertures?
Why not counteract these by fitting a suitable anamorph?, particularly as it seems most of the stuff in these columns ends up on a 16.9 telly and is electronically re-sized,you will get full horizontal vision and no cut offs to write home about and you will gain detail.
You can get relatively 'low-squeeze' (say 2-1) to achieve this.
You then of course,if needed, project it (remember that?) using the same lens.

Damn! So much for entertainment.....ccortez wrote: i was typing a smart-ass paragraph that i just deleted
I haven't voted because it is obvious that there will never be a consensus and that the results of the voting process won't/can't be enforced. People will still call it what they want, as evidenced by the arguing going on here. This isn't a reflection of the people but, rather, the lack of a catchy name that makes everyone go "AAAHHHH" in unison. The selection of names just doesn't do the trick. One of the things that's aggrivating about the presidential elections is that you end up voting for the person you hate the least; not necessarily who you think is qualified for the job. I don't think that voting for the name I dislike the least is the best way to build support for this format.ccortez wrote: i realized that for search and FAQ-type purposes, it's pretty important at least for the purposes of this forum that we agree to consensus identification of the thing.
Thus, I vote "NaderVision" or "Dean-O-Scope".

HEYYYYYYYYYY - I LOVE THAT NAMEOld Uncle Barry wrote:PAN8
Now theres something to play with!!
Why did not anyone think of it? (well, apparently someone did).
PAN8 - AHHHHHHHHHH
Nice, playful, light, has music in it and it delivers the meaning.
PAN8 - the shortest poem I ever read :-D
Wide 8 is an overused term - very predictable.
PAN8 - the way to go!
My vote goes to it.

because a 16:9 anamorph, especially one that doesn't lower the optical performance too much, costs as much as ten cameras and a few thousand nail files. a cheap 1.5x or 2x anamorphic will cause as much cropping to 16:9 as shooting flat even without a widened gate and it will lower the resolution and increase flaring.Old Uncle Barry wrote:Why not counteract these by fitting a suitable anamorph?

Wow. So simple, so nice.
Pan8 -- everything we could ask for in a name.
"Wide" will dredge up all sorts of noise in a search. "Pan8" -- if that is actually a searchable letter/number combo -- would be ideal. P8 would be a great abbreviation if it were searchable, which it is not currently.
Can we restart the voting?

I can see it now: Shot in PAN8ccortez wrote:Wow. So simple, so nice.

We definitely should restart the vote.
Should it be Pan8 or PAN8? I'd go with Pan8.
Reflex is lucky - his wife will take him seriously now when she asks him what are you doing Reflex? And his answer will be - I am widening the gate to have a Pan8 camera. Imagine the look in her eyes - the newly found loving RESPECT :-D

I've added Pan8 to the poll. Polls are limited to 10 items, so I removed one of the entries that didn't get any votes.Lunar07 wrote:Reflex is lucky - his wife will take him seriously now when she asks him what are you doing Reflex? My wife's "look of respect" tends to disappear every time a camera-sized package arrives from Germany.

The only problem is that if you Google Pan 8 (with a space) you get a plethora of information on baking dishes and cake pans. :?greyskale wrote:too bad i can't revote... pan8 is perfect
