Letter/number combinations don't work well because one tends to "interpret" them in one's native language when reading them. In French, it becomes a phonetically meaningless "gi-huit" for example.
But not if you know it should be pronounced "Super Gate".
I personally call it ‘Super-wide 8’. I refuse to call it ‘Super-duper 8’ because that has to be the cheesiest name I’ve ever heard. To many people do not take Super 8 seriously as it is, so a name like ‘super-duper’ really does not help this format. :roll:
While I think the enlarged gate is a good thing, I agree with those who think Super Duper is cheesy. When convincing broadcasters to use Super 8 footage in programmes I think you need a serious name, a name that doesn't make Super 8 look silly.
It is difficult to get many professionals to take the format serioisly anyway.

Wide 8 was my first choice, but Mitch wanted super-duper and as the techie behind it he won. I don't regret running with super-duper now, but wide 8 was definitely second. Ultra 8, or 8xtra, would never stood a chance in our books.

You see Rick - techies usually do their part of the work, but if you want to promote something, the geeky/nerdy smart alecky names are left behind, and marketing concerns come forward. This is why you should have stayed with Wide 8. Super Duper 8 just does not cut it.
Simply appending the word "wide" in some way or other doesn't really help that much in terms of distinguishing the format. Super 8 shot with an anmaorphic lens is 'wide' Super 8 - indeed wider than Super Duper 8 in most cases. Super Gate seems to be heading in the right direction as it makes reference to the fact that the widening is achieved via the gate, but is Super Gate sufficiently catchy?
