i need to crack open a s8 cart and load it with clear film, and then install a 45 degree prism where the little door window is located, this way i can run the camera with cart/film loaded, to account for the load/drag, while at the same time being able to view through the lens the tobin speed checker. anotehr project at another date and time icon_wink.gif
dosn't it have a flash pulse output? If it has you should be able to use this to measure the speed very accurately either with an oscilloscope if you have one, or as has been described here using an audio card and a simple bit of circuitry to record the pulses and post analyse them.

i need to get an oscilloscope, and then learn how to use it the other option you mentioned seems viable to me ... how would one go about doing it?
also, mattias, what would i need to use with my xlr input audio recorders(left and right channels) with my canon so i can record the pulse to the one track? i would like to try that, assuming your software works on a mac and i am capable of making the cable/connection that is needed. in fact, i know for certian i have a pilotone box for my eclair ... the connectors are those 6 or 8 pin hirose type/whatever. i then have a resolver or some little boc that is similar to the film groups(had one of those but sold with with that crystal sony cassette recorder i had).

Heres how Romeojesus measured the speed of his Leicina Special: viewtopic.php?t=7426
and heres a few suggestions for making the signal more audio friendly: viewtopic.php?t=8373
I think you can probably just feed the flash contact and GND into your soundcard without damage but a DC blocking cap wont harm. There probably won't be a voltage on the pin when open though so you might need a battery as per Mathis' post.

a digital to pilotone converter, or pedros sync pulse box, or a simple capacitor/resistor circuit as discussed in another thread. the phantom or plug in power will drive it or you'll need a battery. plus the necessary cables and connectors of course. i don't know what outputs your pilotone box has, but a converter from that to xlr shouldn't be very hard fo find/make.
