Mathis- very nice transfer. The bit of strobing while watching it on the computer monitor isn't too bothersome, but on TV it might be.

Is there any particular reason you went to DV before going to the computer? What do you see as the advantage of doing it that way in lieu of omitting the Hi8 tape and running the signal directly to the computer via a Y/C cable and to what do you attribute the vignetting?

The VX1-E is the European counterpart of the US Sony VX-3. I have the latter and love it. They have 3 1/3" CCDs, each rated at 480k pixels.

Great work.

Hey Mathis,

If you can find yourself a Braun Visacustic 1000 or 2000 you'll be able to set the projector to 25fps (for stuff shot at 24fps) or 16 2/3 fps (for stuff shot at 18fps) and totally eliminate flicker when using a PAL video camera. I used to do my transfers this way before I picked up a WP.

Good luck.

My DIY transfer is not much different than yours Mathis. Good job!

The equipment I use consist of a Eumig 810D running at 24fps projected on a piece of A4 paper, and a Sony TRV900E DV camera capturing directly on tape with the default 50th of a second.

The flicker problem was eliminated by a flicker removal plugin that I used in Avid Express DV, which helped, and I blow up the image a little cropping the excess black borders.

One of these days I'll save up enough for a WP.

Actually I find the strobing on TV less obvious.
I conected my camera with Y/C cable to the Canopus Analog/DV converter, that´s what I meant with direct to DV. We speak of the same procedure.
Yes, I really love it, too. Before I turned to Super8, I made all my filmwork with this camera. And it still has some unique character, I especially like the colours. It´s a pity, that the sharpness of Hi8 is so weak.

The vignetting is the projector casing and it is gone on the underscan TV screen, as I already wrote. I should mask the picture before doing the final thing.

I was thinking if I can modify my Bauer to 25fps. Anybody knows?

I´m surprised that you don´t use 1/75 second. Did you try it? With my camera I get horrible flickering at 1/50s.

You guys have projectors that run in different speeds, that is why you need different settings to get it "flicker free".

Cheers. I'll give it a try next time and see if it is better ( Less flicker )

Well, actually no, we both run our projectors on 24fps. But Hong Kong is NTSC, right? That would make sense.

OK, I thought you had the same standard (PAL, NTSC).
