HD = crystal sync ?

Post by Ultrazero »

hello,

I was wondering if hard disk recording could be considered (similar to) crystal sync because there aren't any moving parts? Therefore no speed up or slow down during playback.

Say you recorded audio directly onto a laptop or the Nomad Jukebox 3. What kind of resolving issues would come up?

Actually, recording to a laptop is becomming increasingly popular. It lets the sound person log things and move files around instantly into the "good take" folder and eliminate sorting and digitizing later on after the shoot. Your synch is going to be as good as any crystal recorder, though you may have to change your speed -.1%, depending on the type of camera you shoot with. But, in short, I'd say go for it!

Yes I'd say go for it too - this is probably what I'll record my next movie on - BUT when you talk about crystal synch is your camera crystal synched? - if it is not then having an audio device that doesn't vary it's pitch or speed won't matter - it still won't synch up because of the fluctuations in the cameras speed (ie not every frame will be bang on every 24th or 25th or whatever per second) BUT all is not lost - if you record the audio with the pulses coming out of the synch socket it can be resolved using the software discussed here

and (a while ago) here

Otherwise if your camera is crystal synched then if you use a device like a hard drive or a minidisc then the audio will synch up without the software
