D.o.F Vs Brightness/Exposure

Post by simong »

Hi.

This is a very basic question. And at the moment hypothetical.

If im filming outside with only available light and I want wide shots with a huge depth of field along with close ups with practically no DOF, will I end up with a major difference in brightness on the finished product.

The same question apllies to shifting f -stops mid shot.

Is there anything I can do to avoid this. Or is this a constaint I have to get used to as film maker.

Im asking this question with a view to just making home movies of outings with friends etc. Obviously with proper shoots you can sort this out with extra lighting, reflectors, different film speeds etc.

well, only if you expose them differently. i'm not sure i understand the question. you mean if you open up the aperture to get less dof, will the image get brighter? yes, but you can always compensate with an nd filter. i'd use telephoto for the close ups instead though. that should give you a shallow dof at the exact same aperture.

if you pull during a camera move it can often work. otherwise it's definitely a no-no.
