Im a 17 year old from manchester, england, and ive recently become interested in amateur 8mm film making. However, im finding it difficult to find really basic info on how to start, what equipment i need, how much its likely to cost, and more importantly-where i can get it all from.
if anyone can offer any information at all, or links to beginners sites, it would be MUCH appreciated.

Don't despair, old boy--there's plenty of info out there. I've found the following link a good starting point, it's the 8mm Metadirectory.

As far as gear goes, take a trip to a local camera shop and inquire about consignment super 8 cameras. In my small New England town, I managed to find about a half dozen collecting dust and just waiting to be tested out. And of course, there's E-bay and the high-art of scouring tag sales and flea markets.

Used to be an old boy with a secondhand camera shop in the Corn Exchange before the IRA blew it up. However he is still in business as I have seen him at film fairs. so it might be worth a try in Yellow pages.
If you get a super-8 camera then Jessops (UK photographic chain) in Manchester are likely to have some Kodachrome over the counter - they have it Leeds. Boots (Chain store) used to sell it but must have stopped as I managed to get four rolls cheap so they were obviously clearing out. Anyhow, it might be worth asking at a local branch, you never know what might be lurking in the back room.
Boot (car trunk variety) fairs might be worth a visit.
I have some basic info on books that you can still find at second hand book shops. Book info is on my site link below.
Oh, and do not forget all the charity shops. They are not as good a source as they used to be, but still worth a try.

Look carefully in those camera shows and ask dealers if they have an old Weston light meter. They are the greatest. Check the manual linked to above for how to use it, or any light meter. A 735 or 715 should only cost $5-10 US. Open the cover on the back and see if the needle moves when you point the sensor at a light source or take it outside to see if it works.
It is worth the trouble to learn how to use one.
