i'm always amazed to see S8 there, and it is pretty cheap! I wonder how well they sell? Even small branches I've been to have a good stock of the stuff, I suspect there are more home-movie users of it around than we often imagine.

Hey, don't you worry NewSuper8er. You are NOT alone. Then again, I have heard Britain has abandoned filmmaking in 16mm on TV, but there are quite a few Brits that post on the board that are amateur filmmakers, although I don't know their ages really. However,States-side, there are quite a few filmmakers my age. I got one kid into DR8 because his friend and I go to school and when he told the kid about me the guy got really interested since before hearing about me, he didn't even know that 8mm was still manufactured! There are a lot of skater folk that love the film look and others that love 8mm, but don't know that it is still made. Do your part and spread the word! I don't even shoot video because it's just so meaningless and trivial. People shoot the stuff like their dog taking a crap in the backyard is some priceless moment or something. Don't be afraid to shoot on film just because most people our age just settle for video. Remember, many of the great directors started with 8mm and worked their way up. Film gives you total control because you're the one that adjusts exposure and controls what is in focus and what is important and what isn't within the frame. Film is about patience, spending money shooting wisely, and learning how to make beauty in a medium of moving images. I personally feel that film is much more lifelike as opposed to the cool, artificial look of all but the most high-end video cameras. Look at Collateral, and even that looked artificial on F900s. Video has its place, but film just looks so pretty that I can't bear to settle for anything less.

OK just to correct something - Many many TV productions are shot on Super16 in the UK. Here is a run down of some of the latest:

Monarch of the Glen (drama/comedy)
A Hstory of Britain by Simon Schamer (staged documentary)
Michael Palin, Himalya (documentary)
The Blue Planet (staged documentary)
That drama about MI6 - I can't remember the name.
Taggart (drama)

This is off the top of my head what I can think off immediately- there is loads of stuff

Hi Karl, your reply to my post was very inspirational. And like you say, many of the great directors started with 8mm and worked their way up. Spielberg did this, and he never even went to Film school! Im planning on making a decent 10 - 15 minute short fairly soon and im gonna get a crew together, and introduce them to Super 8! Let some word get around. Anyway im not sure if i can help that much with Super 8 in britain, as i plan to move to America. Sooner rather than later if possible. Still, i will try to spread the word!

I used to be twice as old as my first son as he got older and remain 50 years older than my second son.

Well I'm 27 - not exactly young anymore, but not a "senior member" either!

I'd never heard of Super 8, until I attended a seminar about it at the MRC. The people presenting were very negative about it (if nostalgic), and clearly preferred video. But I watched the short sci-fi film made by the presenter in the early 80s, and was enchanted by it.

Everyone I know thinks I'm crazy for working with S8 rather than DV, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

BTW all I need to do is compose some music, and my very first S8 film will be finished!

I'm 47, not that I give it that much thought. I only got interested in Super 8, and more recently regular 8 and 16mm, within the past three years. Wish I'd gotten into it 20 or 30 years ago. Maybe then I'd know what I was doing. I have a blast, even though my footage is not particularly noteworthy. I love to project my films. Makes me feel like a kid again, watching the latest family birthday or vacation film.

I'm 65 and have no problem with it...when I consider the alternative. Shot my first R8 on an old Keystone that I purchased in a Japanese pawn shop .... some GI needed the cash. That was when I was stationed there in 1959. :roll: :roll:
