Tips on making a "Still Film" movie.

Post by Dcm »

I suppose this is something like a small format film question: I recently finished shooting film on slides... going for a Ken Burns / Chris Marker effect...

So I digitized all the slides, edited them in FCE and now need to export the final product. Problem is, all the export codecs do funny and different things to the jpgs... none of them perfect. Some cause terrible flickering when images fade in and out, others slice and dice the movie into interlace lines (highly visible even when played on a DVD player), and some artifact badly on dissolves and fade outs...

And the "Export as self contained movie" option doesn't work at all. For some reason only parts of the image ever appear... or none at all.

I've had none of these problems with my dear old super 8 tranfers...

So, anyone have any experience making films with JPEGS only?

BTW I'm using FCE2 and iDVD...

I hate to say this, but you may want to take this question to the dvinfonet forums. They have a room for editing on the mac and the warden Jeff Donald knows bootloads about fcp.

just set the sequence's as well as the images' field order to none. what you export to should depend on how you want to distribute it only, it's not a quality issue. what do you mean a self contained movie doesn't "work" btw? did you render before exporting?

Thanks for the DV forum nod... there are so many out there it actually discouraged me from picking one...

Regarding the self contained movie: Final cut express typically has two export modes available "Export as Quicktime movie" and "Export using Quicktime conversion"... the latter is what you select if you want to mess around with codecs... but I cannot tell what the former is used for... it doesn't "work" in the sense that when i fully render my film in the timeline and then choose "export as a quicktime movie" and then check the box "make movie self contained"... it creates a file in 2 minutes that contains only the audio... I was lead to believe (reading elsewhere) that I should be able to create uncompressed movies this way specifically for use in iDVD...

Anyway, I'll try the DV forums...
