Transfering from mini-dv. Stuck at 360x288?
My question to those who have had there super8 telecined films transfered from mini-dv to your pc's for editing.
Those that have done it, at what resolution do you capture your video? For some reason I can only capture it at 360 x 288 (half the resolution of 720 x 576).
I wish to capture it at full resolution 720x576 and then scale it down to 480 which I think is a decent size for online viewing.
I'm capturing from a mini-dv tape using firewire. All the settings tell it to capture at 720 but when played back the video is half the resolution.
Any ideas why it's doing this?
Regards,

Sorry. I'm using Adobe Premiere 6.5 to capture it. Capture settings are all set to 720x576. Capturing it using microsofts dv codec.sunrise wrote:You have to tell us what software and what codec you are using. How do you change your settings?

In Explorer, when I right click on the file and go to its properties.. it's saying its 720 x 576, but the video itself is half. (at 100% zoom)
I just tried capturing it with windows media player using the windows media codec 9 and it allows me to capture it at 720 res, but the fps are a bit choppy. I'm gonna keep on experimenting.

I've seem to have found the problem. For some reason, the MS DV codec only captures video at half the resolution. I tried a different DV codec called MainConcept, and it gave me the same results. The pictures was halved at 360 x 288.
I tried capturing it with other non-dv codecs like DivX and Indeo and they all seem to capture it at the resolution I specify (720x576), but the end result is not very good (low quality and choppy frame rates)
So there is a problem with the DV codecs. Might be a Windows XP issue. I'll see if I can use someones Mac to capture the dv and put it on a dvd-r.

Are you using Windows 2000? On Windows 2000, the default playback size for all DV is half-size. This means you could actually be capturing at full PAL resolution (as the file properties indicate), but your media player is scaling it down when it plays it. If so, you may be able to access the codec from the file properties and change the default to full size.
