The Supermag 400 is now ready!
Moderator: Andreas Wideroe
If you search for some of the old topics on what specs a new super8 camera should have you will find that most people on this forum have lots of opinions on whats good for the super8 community, but it's all based on their own point of view and from what they need in a cam.
The Supermag is the first trully useful and original super8 invention since the workprinter. It's the first invention for super8 filming profesionals in more than twenty years!
No wonder everybody has got an opinion on it. They've waited twenty years for this.
Pro8mm... What can I say?... Do they really want this product? Every other inventor, seller and lab are active members on this site (even though they don't tell you), so why not pro8?
I would still like to help with the online product clips, and feel I could do a good job at it, as expressed in the mail I sent you , Dave.
Pull this of and you'll be the super8 hero!

I doubt that Kodak even gives a s--t at this point!

I opened up the Pro8mm are scum door...I will leave it open. I am very vocal about the fact that they screwed me and have shitty customer relations.
What about Paul Cotto?? Where is this dude?? I thought he was hours away from his slitter?? Now, he is silent..........
The Super-Mag is something that I am sure will sell a few units. WHo know's it may catch on. I would be more than happy to shoot a true registration test of a chart.
Waiting to see what happens at this point.
Good Luck

I would like to join the rest in congratulating Dave on the success he has achieve with the development of his 400" magazine so far. However it looks like Dave is another victim of the notorious Pro8 lab.
Phil isn't doing Dave any favor by providing him with poorly perforated film that has been fogged & destined for the garbage can. I think Eric's no strings offer of help in regards to raw stock is an avenue that Dave should peruse. Perhaps a professional lab like Forde Labs in Seattle (that has a good reputation for their Super 8 processing) would be willing to assist Dave with quality processing.
I think Phil's offer of stock & processing to assist Dave with this effort was well intended, but as many of us have witnessed, the quality of the work of Pro8 leaves much to be desired. Now that the ready for serious testing the services of a professional lab need to be sought out so that potential problems that may still plague the magazine may be differentiated from faulty stock & bad processing.
Hopefully Dave's long struggle to succeed in producing a 400' magazine for Super 8 filmmakers is about to be realized. Although the clips that Dave posted on his website were riddled with problems, I appreciated his honesty in sharing with the community the work in progress. I think he is correct in assuming the there will not be an overwhelming demand for the magazine. This is a hand crafted accessory for a niche market, a labor of love on Dave's part as far as I can see. If he gives the attention to quality control that Roger gives to his workprinters, I'm certain it will be successful.
If the pressure pad in the magazine is well designed, this could be a very compelling reason to buy film on daylight loading spools even inn 50' lengths on daylight spools rather than 50 cartridges. I have a Beaulieu 6008 Pro so I was glad to hear that the mag worked fine with Peo 8 6008.

honesty and full disclosure as it happens and as resourses permit(time, work, money). he posted what he had, instead of an over inflated bells and whistles marketing campaign that makes everything seem and appear ultra cool.Dave Hardy wrote: Although the clips that Dave posted on his website were riddled with problems, I appreciated his honesty in sharing with the community the work in progress.

i drive a beater pathfinder ... it runs, and continues to run no matter what i do to it. if i were to drive this car in the states, for example, people would JUDGE me as being some poor and financially distressed idiot. the consumption stateside is unreal ... heck, just to have a baby these days one spends $20k(or their insurance does), and 10 people/doctors/nurses are in the room, and everything imaginable is administered, just ot give birth .... which is a completelty NATURAL process. it is a mindset, and a judgemental one that is running rampid and that has many a soul in debt and over extended as they try to afford the very goods and services which are delivered to them as snake oil. there are so many examples of htis it is not even funny. like with capture cards ... aja, decklink, etc., have MARKETED their product ... if you do some snooping, you'll find a dozen other companies that offer the same product, for 1/2 the cost ... but it does not have a painted ideal force fed via marketing.

From the girlfirend with the Lancashire (Blackpool) accent
Thank you very much for all the help you've offered and all the good advice you've given David in your letters. I've now read all of them and I sense your interest, concern, appreciation and hopes that David finally cracks the nut (if not the nuts)!
Can you imagine how I deal with David's creative temperament - especially, as I'm very creative myself? But that's it, isn't it, being creative means I have lots of opportunity to approach David's spontaneous outbursts creatively, and be assured, I do!
I have watched David struggle with his invention for almost two years now and tried to encourage him every step of the way. On the dark and deadly night he stormed about the house convinced he could never succeed, I simply hit him over the head with the proverbial frying pan and sent him back into his cave to get back to work. I'm glad I did, for I have found your letters entertaining beyond belief and a great insight into the male support network. You're all wonderful and David wouldn't have got so far if he wasn't so stubborn and temperamental. (I hope that doesn't sound pretentious.)
David is determined the Supermag should give complete satisfaction to his customers and he's working very hard to make sure that it's as good as it can be. You can be certain that he won't be happy until he know's all the kinks have been ironed out. Like many inventors, his people skills aren't A+, but he has the biggest heart I've ever known - he REALLY cares and REALLY feels things deeply - which is why he's over-reacted to some of your genuine and helpful criticisms. I think they're very supportive and so many of you have gone to a lot of trouble writing long letters - it's obvious you care a lot. Thank you for that.
I'm so sorry the Brits don't like my Blackpool accent, but that's life, I guess. Most southerners still think that anyone north of the Watford divide must be a Pict, Celt, or leftover from some Viking Invasion complete with the barbarities of those ages - maybe that's why my mother called me Barbara. Ah, lak a day!
For the rest of the world, however, let me assure you that every town in Britain has a different accent, and having a good ear for music, I find the general Welsh, Irish, Cumbrian and Northumberland accents enchanting and can even emulate some of them, along with a passable Birmingham and Cockney accent. I think they're all wonderful, even the mouth-full-of-marbles accent attributable mainly to those south of Watford divide. A Scots accent would have been good, but that's beyond me, and the Glaswegian and Highland accents are almost impossible to understand unless you've lived there (which I have).
For those who don't like the accent, it's OK. The Yanks think it's great and there are more of them than there are of you!

i'll work! he'll get it working ... i fail to see he has come this far only to stop working on it. the point being ... once he completes this invention/product, then he can move on to his next one, and so on ... the prototyping process will get better and better ... and it seems he is a far better prototyper then he is a filmmaker, but it just so happens he is making a film product. to take a product from start to finish is an accomplishment, especially when fabrication and electronics are concerned ... look at roger, and 'almost' paul(what happened to his film machine??), and a few others people here on this site ... making things a reality. if dave's grumpyness is any indication of the stress involved in trying to perfect something, then perhaps we can gain better understanding for some of hte other grumps/inventors on this site ;)

Please comment the next promo as well

Not unfamiliar with British accents. Family liveth in Mancunion and I really fancy the heavy Riverpool accent too. Sounds like English with a true Norwegian accent when they get excited

Anyway I am almost tempted to order the mag on the premesis this far to support Dave. The only catch to me is film availability on my side. May be sorted out.

Since I was the one pointing out that the warranty was a bit short, I thought I would be the first to say that the new warranty is very good!
The new 6 month warranty should be enough for everyone to feel that they have time to fully test their mag before the warranty ends.
And the new additional warranty for 50 $ gives an additional 12 months, giving a total of 18 months waranty. Now that is really great!
And I think that it seems like a much more trustworthy product when he can give this new warranty, not that it wasn´t before but it is much more appealing for customers now I think.

It's terrific that Dave updated the webpage so promptly & supplied more info on the mag & his warantee. What would be really helpful at this stage would be if Dave could post some pictures on the site showing the pressure pad on the magazine. Hopefully this is not one of the plastic pressure pads from the Kodak cartridges as this was the shortcomming in Kodak's design of the cartridge.
I'm sure that I'm not alone in wonderring what the difference is between the $25 Daylight spool & the take up reel. I like the look of the digial counter on the mag. That was a reaaly nice add on to the design. Thanks Dave, the additional improvments are appreciated. Although you must be eager to get the magazine out to market, it's worth it take the extra time to get it right. We want your magazine to be a sucess.
