hello

im considering the transfer 8mm (standard/super8/perhaps 16mm too to vhs/mini dv or cam) as a small professional service in the uk

Accordingly I'd appreciate peoples thoughts on what gear i'd need to consider purchasing./ I've heard that elmo are quite good machines and would need machines that pick up sound where applicable.

All thoughts appreciated!!

Yep, moviestuff has what you need. It's called a workprinter and transfers via digitizing 8mm/s8mm/16mm film on to your hard drive where once digital you can preform editing, formatting, authoring, and whatever your imagination allows. Better get your order in yesterday, it takes about 8-10 weeks to get the goods.

I suggest that you take a look at the "Flashscan 8" from MWA in Berlin.
This is a newly developed professional digital filmscanner, with soundhead, for 8 mm and super 8 mm film. For more information on the unit, see their homepage http://www.mwa-nova.de. The price is around 27 000 Euro.
I have been using the Flashscan 8 for about 2 weeks now (in Norway), and I am very pleased with it.

Video Fred uses one of the above's cameras. You could capture at 1280x960. 8O

Terje,

Re the FlashSCAN 8 unit, how does the picture quality compare to what you get from a WorkPrinter? Since this is a real time transfer unit, can I assume you end up with some shared frames?

Thanks,
sigr

no. it's most likely crystal controlled and shutterless, much like a rank or similar.

sure, but if you're shooting a feature and a few music videos it's not much more than what you'd pay if having somebody else scan it for you, and if you run a transfer service it's only 2700 euro per year over a ten year depreciation period, which is how i like to see the cost of any investment.

terje, it's time for a few example clips!!!

I would say that the quality, compared to that of the WorkPrinter, is about the same. It is, however, easier to use, much faster and more stable than the WorkPrinter XP. It also takes sound, but it is of course much more expensive.
That's how I see it.

It is a realtime unit, and some of the frames are doubled to get the correct speed. I some times run it on 25 frames/sec and do the speed correction on the computer to get a replay that is as smooth as possible.

Unfortunately I am not able yet to put film clips on my web page, but I will see if I can find a clip from one of my customers that could be shown.
Could it be uploaded to this server?

The one he uses is one step down from that one, a 1/3 inch ccd instead of a 1/2 inch ccd. But that is HD isn't it?

true HD would be 1920x1080... but it's a wide spread term and you could well use it for anything above SD ;)
