Bolex B8 repair

Post by studiocarter »

There is a thread lower here now past that spoke of fixing B8 motors so they run smoother. Martin Baumgarten wrote instructions for it and so did, uh, someone else. :?:
My B8 cams are both now lubed thanks to that thread. Today I got the leather roller to actually roll and I got the viewfinder cleaned.
Hint: don't lube the roller, use a file to ream it out. Add graphite, I used a 2B lead to rub in the tube. They should turn with just a little pressure, like, the film passing over it.
It is nice to see the high prices they get on e-bay, $70-$120 depending on the lenses included. Looks like I wasn't stuck too badly buying two and only getting one with a quiet motor. The one with the noise in it is lubed, too, however, it will only run quietly when laying on its side. Straight up it makes a vibrating sound. Any ideas?
I'm not about to dig deeper into it today, maybe later. Fixing the leather rollers and the viewfinders has inspired me.
Hurry up John and send that Fomapan!

P1

Post by studiocarter »

The Bolex P1 is very much like the B8, only more advanced in design.
Inside, the leather roller, now, developed further than the B8, in the P1 has a plastic sleeve inside it to keep it rolling, however, there is a gold spring clip on the outside that engages with a ratcheted bottom of the sleeve. Now, which way does it go? I think, correct me if I'm wrong, it goes so that if the film take up reel takes up the loop it will make the leather roller roll and the spring/ratchet thing will click. Yes? Otherwise, the roller will not roll backwards towards the gate. The spring stops it.
In the B8 it just rolls either way if it rolls at all. The leather was stuck fast in my B8s and Martin said it must roll or filming will suffer.

Bolex repair

One quick note: some have suggested using WD40 as a lubricant for cameras. This is not recommended if you ask me. WD40 was developed to remove water and is way too thin for a proper camera lubricant. It evaporates which is not what you want. It can be used to free up stuck mechanisms or clean up gummed up gears etc. but always use a quality sewing machine oil or similiar for lubing gears and shafts etc. One good use for WD40 = it is great for cleaning and restoring the shine to hard plastics like many S-8mm camera bodies. Give it a try!
