Kodak Splice Tapes?

Post by tacotim »

So I walk into the camera store That I have been buying splice tapes from for years and the owner tells me that kodak will no longer supply him with tapes? I hate to start a "kodak is discontinuing x product!" rumor, but can any one confirm or deny this? Just curious as I teach a super8 class 2x a year and the final project is edited using kodak splice tapes.

Thanks, Tim

I know this may not help but have you considered Kodak Film Cement and a cement splicer?

Super8man-

In response to your post about using liquid cement- Can you offer any tips on attaching white leader to 8mm film? ie- How much overlap? Any special prep to the either end to insure a solid bond? etc. I am considering using liquid cement over tape so seeking any information available.

Kodak is still making splice tapes...

It was rumour that was started but is unfounded.

Call Kodak and order some. They even had a statement about this on their website.

Good Luck

I recommend picking up a BOLEX splicer on ebay - they do both regular 8 and super 8. They run from $15-125 depending upon the mood of the bidders. Worth it at any price really. Fine craftsmanship.

As for the cement, I am referring to a specialty product: KODAK FILM CEMENT. You can find it at better camera stores like http://www.pardeescameras.com (not on their website but in the store).

Essentially, you scrape a BEVELED edge on each half of the film and leader and bond the film together with the splicer. Its not like super glue or anything like that. If done correctly, the splice is stronger than the film itself (it will tear elsewhere).

Cement splices are the only way to go.

Cheers,
m

PS - Otherwise, for one time use, use some clear tape and trim exactly - it will get your through on a one time use basis.
