K40 discontinued, but when?

Post by Guest »

Does anyone know how long we have until the stock is fully depleted and how long the processing will continue for after full depletion.
Ralph.

K40 has not been discontinued.

The K40 + prepaid mailer SKU has been discontinued in the USA only. I'm in Canada, and Kodak Entertainment Imaging informed me that they will continue to sell K40 + processing here and elsewhere. They also indicated that outstanding US prepaid mailers would continue to be honoured.

You can still purchase K40 without processing for ~$10.83/roll direct from Kodak, and have it developed through Wal-Mart ($4.88/roll) or directly through Dwayne's at $9/roll.

Ralph,

Kodachrome 40 is not being discontinued. What is being discontinued is 16mm K40 in 400 foot reels. Not good, I admit, but you will still be able to get it in 100 foot reels. Also, the K40 S8 WITH pre-paid processing is being discontinued in the US. You will still be able to buy K40 S8 without the pre-paid processing.

That's what it says. Did you read it differently, or are you particularly concerned about the 16mm 400 foot or the S8 with prepaid processing?

Despite the fact that I think Kodak should discontinue K40 and I tell my Kodak rep that every time I see her(As recently as last week). Her words are "Kodak will stop K40 Super8 when they give us bullet-proof vests." Meaning they know the numbers and they know that if they kill that kid there will be so much backlash that it is not worth it.

I still hope that it just goes away....

Good Luck

Nigel, why? You do realize, don't you, that many of us are not professional cinematographers, as you are? Kodak has already killed the old Ektachrome emulsions, and hasn't introduced any new color reversal stocks.

Why would you wish the rest of us to be forced to shoot negative film that we can't project and can't afford to telecine as our only color film option?

Oh, by the way, I'm actually OK with Kodak killing K40, so long as they bring back K25. :D

Andreas, can we start a petition urging Nigel not to tell his rep to kill K-40. 8O

By the way, I'm tired of these misinformation headlines that don't get "corrected" but just linger days on end on the forum, it's just not right.

i wouldn't mind if they got rid of k40 either, and in fact i think they should as long as it was replaced with another reversal stock. a few ektachromes of different speeds and saturations would be nice. these emulsions exist for still photography, so i can't be that hard...

K40 is by far the most used stock. Thus, suggesting that it is discontinued is the same as suggesting that S8 is discontinued.

Such a suggestion of this Group is not far short of moronic.

well i understand itll be available in super8, thats what my sources tell me but id rather see the lineup of neg in super8, and preferably in double super8. telecine is cheap if you shop around and it can be printed up and look great affordably.. i like that!

um, yeah, but it's not because i'm a "professional" that i don't like k40. i only use super 8 for personal work and no budget stuff anyway. i just don't quite like the look*, the severely limited latitude, or the fact that it takes forever to process. i still use it since it's the the only color reversal and it's cheap. if ekta cost as little and could be processed at your local lab, wouldn't you rather have that?

*except if i'm after a home movie or retro look that is
