I've hosed my Supertronic--Need some ideas
I finally got around to regluing the reflex mirror behind the lens. In the process, the mirror fell into the lens assembly and caught behind the integrated filter. I was lucky that the rear element of the lens didn't scratch, but the process of removing the mirror caused two things to happen to the camera:
1) The integral daylight filter is scratched to hell.
2) The zoom motor wires broke off at the base of the zoom motor.
Does anyone know a good resource for a stiff piece of daylight filter? I know it's a Wratten A, but I don't know if it's 80, 81 or 82.
Also, does anyone know if the zoom motor is polarity sensitive? If not, I'm not worried about how I resolder it, but I don't want to burn it out. If it is sensitive, which wire goes into the outside post?
Anyway, the mirror has been reglued and I can now see through the viewfinder.
Thanks a bunch,
Brandt

Should be 85Brandt wrote:

Supertronic zoom motor wiring diagram
Thanks Filmbuff. I'll start looking for an 85A. A local shop has a free swatchbook, which might have a heavy enough gel in it.
Does anyone know which wire is which, or even if it will make a difference?

Look for an 85 not 85A. These are different.Brandt wrote:Thanks Filmbuff. I'll start looking for an 85A. A local shop has a free swatchbook, which might have a heavy enough gel in it.

Filter different from other Sankyos?
I read one of the Sankyo guides online and it says that it uses a Type A daylight filter.
Is the Supertronic different from other models in this regard?

hi, I can't really help about where the wires go into, but polarity is probably an issue as the cameras work with DC power sources (batteries..)
I'm not an electronics wizard, but some of our members should be (at least in other threads I've seen people getting all technical about capacitors and whatever, so someone should be able to help in something as simple as motor polarity!)

I would just remove all remnants of the in-camera 85 gel filter. Use a good glass 85 filter such as B+W, Tiffen etc on the front of your lens (52mm filter size as I recall). This will give you the best color correction and protect the front element of your lens.
Secondly, don't get too discouraged if you can not resurrect the zoom moter. The power zoom becomes one of the lesser used abilities of this camera as you gain experience with it in my experience. I almost never use power zoom in any of my S-8mm cameras. You can live without it for sure.

As far as the zoom motor is concerned, providing it is just the connection to the motor and there are no other electronics involved/attached, then you are quite safe to connect the wires any way round. The only thing that will happen is that the motor will change direction- in fact the zoom control buttons will do exactly the same thing (reverse the motor connection) so no worries there. You might just find that the zoom control is reversed from how you are used to it.

Re: Filter different from other Sankyos?
A Type A daylight filter IS 85 not 85A. The 85 filter is used with Type A balanced film as the Kodachrome 40. Type A film is balanced for 3400K Tungsten. Do not confuse this nomenclature with the Filter numbering system. A Type A Film takes the filter 85 (to use in daylight of course). All Super8 cameras (and other cameras as well) are like that. They use the 85 filter with Type A 3400K tungsten balanced film. So your camera is no different.Brandt wrote:I read one of the Sankyo guides online and it says that it uses a Type A daylight filter.
