Quarz, they didn't just make wind up tanks

Something tells me they've got some real interesting cameras from the former USSR and all we've been seeing are the crude quick sell offs.

What else have they got up their sleeves?

Quarz cameras

I wouldn't mind having one of those, but in my mind it doesn't compare to the solid metal construction of my beautiful little 1x8S-2.

I think this was the only other Super-8 they made, although they may have made a DS8.

these are actually just the battery powered version on the wind up. Olex sells these too. He told me they give the same picture quality as the wind up but in the plastic toy like housing. Fun though and for the price I'm sure it can't be beat!

Not entirely true.
Some features are better, and some worse, comparing to 1xs82. (having both in my hands right now)
First of all the lense - it is 1,2/8-40 58 (1,8/9-38 46 on 1xs82 ). Looks like the brightest non removable lense on 8mm camera (or...?).
Viewfinder is smaller in diameter, but if you look through it, there is no noticeble difference in size, but the picture is much brighter.
Plastic housing seems cheap, and it is, but onlu on the outside. Film compartment is similar to one on 1xs82. 8XL has brass motor wheel instead of plastic, Film speed notches, but gate looks cheaper, the one on 1xs82 resembles more K3 machined gate. This one looks like cast one.
+ Power zoom and macro (power zoom switch hammer operated thou ;))

Major demerit thou is its sound...
Is sounds like a ww2 bomber taking off, when you push the trigger :)
No way to shoot sound with it. (who would anyway ).

The reason it is not as popular as 1x8s2 is probably the numbers.
They produced "only a little over 30 000 of them, vs. over 300 000 of 1x8s2.
...and off course the SOUND. Unbeatable. The advertising slogan shoud state: "scare your neighbours-get the loudest cam on earth "

BTW: Try to get your hands on K4... then play the state lottery ;)

The picture below is made of two "untamperred with" pictures. It IS really that much of a difference as on these photographs.

Very interesting, thanks for posting these comparisons! I notice it's even got CCCP written on the 8xl. :) I think I might have to buy an example of both of these some day. Totally different cameras. A lot of fun in either case.
