nizo 6080 still causin' problems

Post by mr.jordan »

I have this beautiful nizo 6080 and kit I bought off ebay, my first big buy, and i cant get it to work?!
When i recieved it, the camera had ni-cad batteries included that took a charge, but only ran the camera about half the time i turned it on. when it did run, it ran great, and when it didnt, well it made some odd whines and wrrrs (which had something to do with the lap dissolve setting, i finally figured out, just needed to be reset  although it did re-occur after i figured this out?)
So, I bought fresh batteries, charged them up and....nothing! The camera will not turn on. The batteries are charged though, as they work in my other gadgets?
Is the camera just dead? Is there any other way I can test it?
Im considering selling it with the case and full kit explaining the issues on ebay/privately/trade if its not worth the fix, if needed, I know can be expensive.

-all i can think about is that pretty 4008 I passed up for quietness and reliability, errrr... :x

Hia,
Sorry to hear of your plight! I too just bought a 6080 off Ebay and have had a similar experience. The camera had supposedly just been serviced by a Nizo tech, but like yours, just made od whining sounds. I discovered that it wouldn't run unless the cells were totally charged, any voltage drop and it just clams up. The second thing was that it always seemed to be doing slow timelapse! It turned out that the selector switch was mis-ligned when it had been re-assembled, so would never stop! So much for a qualified tech!!!
As for yours, have you double checked the battery contacts in the hand-grip or the main power switch??? The switch mechanism is notoriously prone to sticking.
Good luck!

Keep shooting the "reel" stuff...

THis sounds like the same problem as im having, how would i go about fixing this, is it something i can do on my own?

what exactly do you mean?
the contacts look clean, maybe it isnt connecting inside the grip?
what do you mean exactly by the switch "sticking"? As in that it remains stuck in the on position?

ive heard of this problem from a few people i know. they basically found the cameras to be stuffed.

as for the beaulieu, only the 5008's and up are reliable. the 4008 had a crap motor that goes wonky far sooner than the ones after the 4008, and the motors are expensive

With regard to the 6080 problems, as synthnut has pointed out, there can be problems with the switches being mis-aligned.

This can happen to basically any of the switches mounted on the main side panel because they are knobs that are fixed and rotate on this panel and key with the actual switch attached to the circuit board. Thus when the side panel is replaced after service the knobs can be easily mis-alignedcauseing the user to think thay have set the camera to one setting when infact it is on another.

To rectify the panel has to be removed again to ensure att key together correctly.

although not quite the same I had a similar issue with a nizo 1048... I put on the batteries and nothing...

so I decided to check the connectors inside the grip; they looked fine, no corrosion, intact, etc. anyway, I decided to lift them a little bit, plugged the batteries and it began runnning again... you ought to try this before you give up on such beautifull piece...

Hia,

Yeah, don't give up! Mine is now working just fine, having removed the side panel and correctly aligned the switch mechanisms with their actuators on the panel. If you set all the switches to their red spot marks and then remove the side you can check that they are the correct positions with a little deduction. I too would check out the physical connections in the hand-grip and also that the master switch is operating OK. It may also be a good idea to discharge your new cells and then charge them again as new ones tend not to take a full fill. If the battery condition indicator on my 6080 doesn't do as it should this always point to duff cells. The 6080 is suprisingly different to the 4080! I have a dead one that is in need of some surgery, trying to compare it with a good one still gives me a headache...

Good luck!

nizo woes

Post by drsanchez »

I too have a Nizo 6080. I just got it but haven't run any film through it yet. When I put freshly charged batteries in, it whirrrrs for a second or two then completely stops. Based on what the rest of you are saying, I'm thinking of sending it off to get an overhaul/tuneup. I'm really not very mechanical and am kind of scared to crack things open. Also, I'm willing to pay someone qualified to do it right.

A quick google search came up with recommendations of:

Kino Video Technik Schacherl
Buchhofer Strasse 22
82140 Olching, Germany
Tel: 49 81 42 12262 http://www.video-technik-schacherl.de/

Has anyone used him before? (His name is Kurt Schacherl) What about Steve Gal at Du-All cameras in NYC?
