I've been doing some research on exposure lately because I want to start shooting with my Bolex B8 and eventually my H16. Anyway, I stumbled across some interesting reading, go to http://www.sekonic.com, click 'instruction manuals', then at the bottom of the page is a downloadable pdf file called 'Exposure Meters and The Cinematographer.' Obviously, this paper is aimed at getting you to buy a Sekonic light meter, but it might be useful info for you anyway.
On a side note, what are you guys all using for determining your exposure settings? Currently, when I shoot S8, I've only been shooting with automatic exposure, but my B8's metering doesn't seem believeable and the H16 doesn't have any metering at all. Is external metering second nature to you guys and what do you use? A couple of those Sekonic meters have specific 'Cine' modes which seem quite handy.
Interesting Download RE. Exposure

try this
ftp://ftp.filmshooting.com/upload/video/Exposure.mpg
right click and choose save target as to download it. It is 15.7MB
A Regular 8mm film shot with a Weston light meter and a Bolex H8 RX camera. Exposure was to a gray card. Close ups of the instruction book and light meter dial.

I use a Gossen SBC. Cinema mode is probably nothing more than 1/48 shutter speed. Which is the speed for 180 shutter @ 24fps.
Its not that difficult to use an external meter. It does take a little practice, after a while it will be second nature and lead to more versatility in the way you light and expose.
