Flicker when transferring 8mm to VHS

Post by Airmid »

45 years ago, this week, my father bought a Brownie 300 projector, camera, lightbar...the whole show, to take movies of his new daughter...me. I have recently rescued this film, after 20 years, from my mother (the b!tch). It is very important to me to share these film with my sisters.
I've been trying to project them onto a sheet covered wall and film them with my camcorder. Problems that I'm finding are flicker, big time, and the color is getting washed out. I'm setting up the camera about 6-8 inches from the wall, I was told I would get better quality if it was as small a picture as possible.
These are great color films, very true color and I'd like my sisters to see them that way. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I'm trying to do this the most inexpensive way possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ah but Marc

My mother is a nasty, drug-addicted, mean, vindictive person. She kept these films from us because they belonged to my father, whom she divorced because he got MS and wasn't ever going to be "the perfect husband". My father was my whole world and I'd like to preserve and share his films. By the way, I only inherited the vindictive part from her, thus the b!tch part of my post. Merry Christmas Dude.

I love holiday cheer! 8) I can't really give you any advice on converting your film to video. But I'd like to say you may enjoy showing your sisters the film in the original format. Listening to the projector noise and smelling the scent really brings back memories for me. Much more so than when I watch the converted film on a video tape. 8mm/Super8 projectors can be had on eBay for pretty cheap. Ask if the bulb is working because replacement bulbs can cost as much as the prjoector itself! Gather all your sisters, set up the screen, turn on the projector, and have fun. But have a box of Kleenex handy when you get all emotional!! Have fun!

I guess some people would say I'm a sucker for sentiment. I almost lost my dad in October due to a stroke (he's 80) and I dread the time when he is no longer around. I'm blessed with the fact that the hero in my life is my dad. Last year I rescued a friend of mine's film that his dad had shot when he was no older than one year. It is the only film his dad ever shot and no one had seen it since it was shot in 1965. I rejuvenated and cleaned the film and transeferred it on my custom made telecine projector with arial lens to DV. I edited it on my computer to remove flash frames and to create fades, dissolves etc to smooth out the film. I put titles on it and gave it back to him with the original film mounted on 400ft reels along with VHS copies for his family to show. The image quality is far superior than anything you can come up with without purchasing a Workprinter. In the spirit of the time, I offer you my services and will only charge you the actual expenses that I may encounter, but basically it will be for free. Just to show you the kind of people that are in this world still and you can find right here on this website. Besides, I'm a buckeye myself! :) If you're interested, please email me and we can arrange it. Whatever course you take, please be very careful with your dad's footage and good luck.
