Camera Buff

I watched a film last week called "Camera Buff" by Krzysztof Kieslowski. It's about a guy who gets given an 8mm camera when his child is born, but the becomes obsessed with film making.

There are some quite sharp insights into the emotions and obsessions involved in raw, basic filmmaking (for me at least :lol: )

It would make a good double bill with 8 & 1/2.

Great movie.
Filip (name of the main character) gets Quarz DS8 M
Then he gets K3!!!
Both cams made by Zenit factory (kinda like "product placement" :lol: )
It's a must see for movie freaks.

You can buy Camera Buff on DVD in region 1 & 2 as well as Kieslowski's other earlier features. I always preferred his films from the 70s to the Decalogue. Did not like Veronique or Blue.

Some more insight, since the movie is all strictly about FIMLING 8mm and 16mm. (unlike some threads in this forum

As for girls and 8mm:

This is Quarz2. Used to cost about '2 monthly salaries (as referred to in the movie).
The tripot made in DDR, heavy duty wooden legs and incredibly smooth head, as for non fluid one.

Meonet - Czech made editor - the only Commie-made with horizontally placed rolls. N stands for Regular (Normal) 8,:

Price, also mentioned in the movie, 16.000zl - a small fortune back then as one USD was 120zl on black market and we are talking MIGHTY DOLLAR, not the one we have these days. Average salary back then was 1.700zl
Trivia: Kieslowski himself used heavily K3 for his documentaries (as a matter of fact, the documentary in the film resembles one of Kieslowski's).
Also Andrzej Sekula, while in the army, owned one, shooting documentaries (for the army off course). In fact "Reservoir Dogs" was his first feature as DP.

That's a great post!

Reflecting on this film the past few days, I think this is really one of the great films about cinema. Very beautiful. I've kind of lost sight of Kieslowski in the past few years, but this really took me back to seeing the "short film" series in the 80's - as a kid it was really a striking experience for me - one that is rare - I recently had the same experience watching films by Bela Tarr.

Check out the picture of the girl holding the quartz. she's either holding the camera backwards, or doing a very extreme close up of her eye.

Fantastic film. I've seen it several months ago and recently got the Kieslowski box set that Kino released... one of the best films about creativity and responsiblity ever made. Also a treat for gearheads - the K3, the editor, etc. You also see several scenes of Filip editing his 8mm films as well as going to a film discussion club and talking with Krzysztof Zanussi and Andrzej Jurga.
