Sometime ago I was lucky enough to be invited to the presentation of Swiss Effects to my country. As you may know, Swiss Effects is considered THE company for video to film transfers. Part of the demo roll was shoot with a Super8 camera. The super8 footage (k40 and Ektachrome) was telecined to Digital Betacam pal and then treated for transfer.
It was awesome.
It was SO clear why the digital origination is not the way to go for theatrical projection...I mean, the demo included all you can imagine, 24p digibeta, beta sp, dv and dvcam, and lower quality such as 8mm and Hi8/svhs. Even the HD24p lack the organic quality of film.
More than the manifesto of a film feak (I supposse that if I could afford a Cinealta with the PRO35 adapter and a few Zeiss primes, I will be a Digital freak ;-)), I just was wondering if we are really aware of the possibilities of our littles cameras.
I'm messing around with a project, that will be mainly super16, but I really like the Super8mm freedom. All the footage will be telecined to cinealta and then edited in a cinewave, flame, etc (I'm lucky enough to have some friends as runners in 3 of the majors effects house in my country).
My question is: what are the facilities, all over the world, that are able to transfer super8mm to cinealta. In other words, who are mad enough to get a super8mm gate to their state-of-of-the-art spirit or Vialta?. I know these gates exists, but I have no idea who has them. Since it is more a filmscanning that a SD telecine, no rank or similar would be enough.
Any clue?.
Thanks!
