I would not bother shoot at all - simple as that.

But I'm thinking of making a "movie" about making movies using old film cameras. It would be sooooooooooo easy to use my video cams; it is tempting. However, it would be soooooooooooooo informative and instructive for me to use a film camera instead. At least, it would give me a lot of practice using film. It would also show up film in use, perhaps different film types could be used.
After I got my H8-RX I made a film about how to use IT.
here it is:
ftp://ftp.filmshooting.com/upload/video ... posure.mpg
Back then, I had to use a TC-20 for transfers to video. Since I still have the "movie (film)" I can xfer it again using 3ccd onto DVD.
BTW, nice audio clip you have.

S8 - Thanks for sharing your convictions about film. It takes courage to share your feelings.
Regular8 - I am not of the same mind as S8 (thought I do admire his convition) I think the film you describe would be wonderful. If the choice you face is: "use video - make the movie/ use film - can't make the movie" I'd like you to ask yourself if your vison would become "too compromised" if you used video? If it would, than wait till you have the resources. But if not, make the movie on video.
You can always reshot it later on film. Consider it a dress rehersal.

If I used video, I could make it in 3-D 8O as written about in this thread:
viewtopic.php?t=6795&sid=2cb920a2af23c2 ... a95c876019
this is the web site to use making 3-D movies out of a normal video.
I wonder if itwould work on a film transfer to video.........????

In a post-apocalyptic world where humans are still able to generate electricity and use electronic audio-visual media, but due to never before dreamed of changes in the environment and background radiation, can no longer use photographic processes and therefore can't shoot film which can no longer be developed...
hmmm...
Yes, in such a set of circumstances, i would shun using video and shoot nothing at all.
We need a "sticky" on this one.

Come On....
Good Luck
Well, this is my very personal opinion:
I´d do as per definition: walk
Reason:
Having taped quite a few kilometers over the years - actually mostly commercial stuff (believe it or not) - I have come to the point that I totally loose any filmatic creativity I may have when I grab a tape cam.
When I grab the S8 cam (In particular) on the other hand I feel like Poppeye The Sailor Man catching his can of Spinach and the (my filmatic) creativity (the one I may have) goes to the max.
It makes such a big difference to to me. Can´t help it.
Apart from technical documentation work (buzz related) I am toatlly finished with taping. The amount of buzz taping consitently reminds me on how bad I feel about it and I will never ever touch tape again for either commercial projects or featurelike hobby stuff. It is such an easy choice to me. The tape option makes me feel sick.
Never touch it again.
Guaranteed.

I'd do exactly what I do with film -- bust my ass to make it as good as possible within its (admitedly pretty serious) limitations.
Which raises another question I never seem to see discussed. Are we really so anti-digital because of the digital storage medium, or the lackluster ability of CCDs to capture anything resembling a quality image? I, for one, think that's the heart of the problem.

Digital has a lot of good things going for it.
Audio acquistion (however non-XLR inputs auto settings are not to good), decent (but flawed) orientable viewfinders, they are light, and offer direct interfacing to computers, a very power combination for many "real time" applications,
If our Super-8 camera had orientable viewfinders, I could incorporate them more easily into a few paying gigs.

If my new cheapo consumer camcorder (which costs as much as my Arri, BTW) would deliver a similar quality than 16mm, I'd still miss those fine cameras and somehow that cool feeling when doing things harder than they actually have to be - but I guess i'd left film shoots for my nostalgic moments most of the time.Roget wrote:Which raises another question I never seem to see discussed. Who knows, maybe in 2 years my next cheapo consumer camcorder does rival 35mm - things went pretty fast in still photography, and the high end cameras are already very promising.
have fun!

don't get me wrong i love the look of super8 and am thinking of shooting a feature in the format because of the look. but all of the footage i have shot on a dvx100 is beautiful. the stuff i have seen (and shot) from an sdx900 is fantastic and i am hearing great things about the new canon xl-2. if you ignore the digital revolution long enough will it go away? I don't think so.

Doesen´t hold water. I´ll give an example:
During recent Athens Games I saw a lot of interview footage shot with PROcorders way above the DVX100. None of them managed to work properly with the outdoor natural light contrast range or even compensated. Total wreckage in my view.
My old run and gun K40 footage (+ any other S8/8 footage I have seen) shot under similar conditions in the same area have no such problems whatsoever and looks sooooo much better. When seeing the DV footage on TV my first thought was: Why do they not use S8? It looks so much better.
I wanted to tape a sample from TV and post here along with my own K40 footage but never got to tape the TV as my VCR broke down.
And since I at least only projects my movies.....
