Kodak Revamps Super 8 Web Page!!
Moderator: Andreas Wideroe
I guess the thread has gone a bit asunder.
The whole electricity thing does scare me. I don't believe we will always have electricity at our fingertips or that it is an entitlement. Electricity is what separates industrialized nations from non-industrialized nations.
Until Electricity is generated without oil, I don't buy into electricity as always being available at our fingertips.
As for trying to make that point relate to this thread, um, well, Kodak should update their super-8 photo display.

Until electricity is generated without oil? There are enumerable ways to generate electricity without oil. Oil doesn't even account for the majority of electricity generated--not worldwide, not in the US, not anywhere that I'm aware of. Coal is the major player in that regard, and coal is cheap and in enormously great supply.
Electricity isn't magic. Once you know of it, generating it is no difficulty. Let's just say we're in some distant, post-apocalyptic, collapsed civilization future: a magnet and a ball of thin wire is all you need. I've made crude hand-cranked generators before using little more than that that have worked quite well, generating around 40v--not enough to power a projector, but more than sufficient to light a lamp.
For projecting film, though, no power is necessary. I've got an old toy 35mm projector that uses a kerosene lamp as a light source. Must have been fun with nitrate film. I've got several magic lanterns (which aren't that far removed from film projectors), all of which run off kerosene or whale oil.
They still make hand-cranked radios. Here's one. Here's a kit to build one.
What was this thread about again? Oh yes, Kodak's Super 8 page. I mentioned the continued need for Kodachrome (i.e., discontinue it and you're going to have a pitch-fork wielding mob on your hands) and how nice it would be to have a new E-6 color reversal film.

I started an "electricity" thread so as not to further diminish this thread.

The generators fitted to all cars produce 12V and up to 1000W!- plenty enough for a good film show. You just need to figure a way to drive them. I'm guessing no electricity means no petrol either. You could build an elaborate system of cranks, pulleys and belts and have your audience pedal for their entertainment- but better make sure it is entertaining! (possibly a good way to filter out all the crap from the cinema!)

Good, because if i'm going to ask Kodak for a scanner or a hand crank, generator lightbulb projector.. i'm gonna go with the scanner :oAlex wrote:I started an "electricity" thread so as not to further diminish this thread.

Yes that is good stuff. A survey, too that's fantastic. Somebody is on the ball.T-Scan wrote:Good stuff here. there is a Super 8 Survey! everyone be sure to fill it out. they have also added a huge list of web sites for S-8.. including this one!

Now let's see, where was this thread led to? Oh yeah, post-apocalyptic fantasies where man is no longer able to generate electricity from coal, gas, methane, solar, wind, wave, nuclear, hydro or any other sources including human power, rendering all digital media useless -- sort of like in THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL where aliens land and turn everything off -- and we're relegated to building stone-age style projectors to make weak flickering images generated from burning fossil fuels or some other source which can no longer be used to generate electricity.
Sure.
I think I'll go fill out that survey.

My own idea of how to project film without electricity:
- The theatre is a darkened room (or course). The projector is built into the wall. One one side of the shutter is the darkened room. On the other side (outdoors) a mirror tracks the sun, directing sunlight onto a lens which condenses the sunlight onto the gate.
- Another mirror tracks the sun, directing sunlight onto a lens which heats a small boiler. Steam from the boiler runs a steam engine which powers the projector.

If the sun yes, 8)
In Japan some years ago they started to use fiberoptics to transport sunlight from office building rooftops (collectors) into the office areas for enhanced comfort and pleasure.
Easy to lead one to the film gate of the manually operated projecteur.
However availability is the big clue and who wants to view films indoor on sunny days only?
I´d go for the petrol or carbide based burners with a hand cranked projecteur
In the initial context I assumed that the problem was no availability form commercial power sources and that home-generated energy alternatives were viable? yes? - no?

but seriously, even extremely overcast days are bright enough to make a silver screen in a dark room glow. in fact if i was to design such a system i'd use a large sheet of diffusion on a window in the projection room and project that surface through the gate onto the screen on the other side. no need for sun tracking or anything. an iris aperture in the lens would take care of any differences in light levels.S8 Booster wrote:who wants to view films indoor on sunny days only?

It will sure do the trix too. /(Very economic)
Here are some high output alternatives too. Guess they too can perform well for projection under overcast conditions.
Interesting system anyhow:

I´d go for a combination of wind power to load batteries (like the one on sailing ships or for home use) and solar cells on the roof. Will definitely be able to power the 12V or 15V for the halogen lamps - if they will still be manufactured... 8O

Logical - this is what happens when no-one shoots [and projects] any film - just talkz/writz/postz, gozipz and bla-bla-blazzz :badgrin:MovieMaker wrote:...
