New Sleep Always Stills posted on website

People often compliment the stills on the Sleep Always website but then I have to point out that they are, mosty, traditional 35mm publicity stills, not actual frames from the movie. Well today I posted some frame grabs directly from the film. You'll find the link at the bottom of the home page: http://www.friendlyfirefilms.ca

While I am at it I will mention that we have sold nearly 100 copies, which is not bad considering I haven't really advertised beyond this site and have not officially "released" it to stores yet - that's coming soon. And we've scored some good reviews and votes at the Internet Movie Database. Anyone who has seen Sleep Always and wants to take the time to post a review or vote at imdb I will be eternally grateful. As it is a fairly mainstream site (and bible for some) reviews here will help when I make my move to get the disc into rental and retail outlets around the world. Very nice frame grabs. They show off the format aspect nicely, too.

To project this format, I guess you'd have to enlarge the film gate on a projector horizontally. Have you ever tried projecting this format?

How about transferring with a WorkPrinter? It already has an enlarged gate. Would the entire Super-duper 8 frame be visible?

We've never projected it onto a wall or screen but our projector gate has been enlarged horizontally as part of our telecine process.

Our telecine set-up is our own "home-made" version of a workprinter from what I can gather. The frames you see on the site are from the telecined super-duper 8 film, exported as jpegs from Final CUt Pro, so whatever is visible there is what we are getting. This is the raw material we get from our telecine. Once they get onto a television screen they lose the TV-safe edges around the entire perimeter but that's another matter.

I can appreciate you may not want to make this public, but how did you light them?

yeah, i love them. i finally have the cash to buy the dvd by the way (no debts, outstanding paychecks too, hooray). should i wait for a version with extras or not? it's suggested on the site that there will be one...

There are 7 stills from different scenes posted so you are basically asking how we lit those 7 scenes and if I don't answer fully it's not because I don't want to go public it's because I can't remember (we finished shooting a couple years ago) - but here goes.
1. probably a 250W Tungsten photoflood through yellow gel (if I remember correctly)
2. and 3. were part of same scene - most of the light was coming through a window. We clamped a 250W Daylight photoflood into the window area to enhance it (sun was going down).
4. Outside - available light
5. Outside - available light
6. Available light from the window
7. Probably a 250W Tungsten photoflood

Actually, that wasn't so tough. Most of Sleep Always was shot with available light and very little artificial light was used - mostly from a set of photofloods we carried around - 100W, 250W, 500W, Tungsten and Daylight. We also had a small fluorescent light as some of the corridors were lit with fluorescent and we wanted to match.

I honestly don't know if there will be a version with extras, certainly not in the immediate future - we can't possibly afford it and I can't see that changing for several years if ever...

Heh. Who needs extras when you can ask the d00d that made it whatever you want? You guys should throw Rick a bone or two, he's a nice guy that made an intriguing movie on a format you're obviously interested in.

well sorry for asking a simple question. i'm sure where you come from "do you have extras" means "fuck you for not having extras", but over here it doesn't. as for throwing bones, where do you think the majority of those 100 orders came from?

Hey Mattias, I had no idea you had ordered the other 99 DVD's. That is so awesome. I'm sorry. Nobody tells me anything.

I guess if he needed to, Rick could always have more information put up on his site. Not that there isn't already a buttload of info there, but it would probably be cheaper than burning more glass. Did you guys ever make a trailer?

Heh, I like that the IMDb recommends American Psycho if you like Sleep Always. That reinforces my theory that Rick's movie is really a horror movie about an ageless evil witch that casually destroys her prey from the inside out. It's like Blair Witch meets Mulholland Drive. Heh, actually the movie does remind me of a Mulholland Drive that doesn't suck, or maybe The Following.

Up to Rick and the others of course but an extras disc just burnt on to DVD-R or +R wouldn't be too shabby - even though the main disc is profesionally burnt. But then there is alot on the web page and revisiting a film after years of work on it may be too painful when there are new projects to get on with.

It'd be good with an extras disc - I'd be keen to see it - but then it's quite good with out it too!

That's it exactly. When do I stop marketing this movie and move on? Part of me is sick of Sleep Always at this point but I am trying to recoup my investment. Dilemmas....

Yes!!! I have been meaning to do one for ages now, we started one some time back but it didn't get finished and now it seems like dredging around in old news. However, I still have the media in my computer (but not the final sound) and I was planning on either pulling a simple trailer together or at least isolating a few sample scenes. There is a Canadian indie film website that is looking to feature us but they are waiting for a trailer, so I should have had this done weeks ago.

Downix if you wanted to take a run at something you would be more than welcome, with the understanding that I may not use it if I don't like it. (But having an "outsider" do one is very attractive because I think you would bring a fresh perspective to it.) I would want to keep it short (1 minute?). I will probably proceed with my own tinkering but I would be curious what you'd come up with.
