Printing R8.
Marc mentioned earlier that DR8 uses the same sprocket holes as 16mm. That's really cool since there are a lot more stocks available for double perf 16mm.
As far as printing, there was a comment that only two shops in the world print 8mm. What about printing double perf 16mm and splitting it? Isn't it the same?
Also couldn't the gate of the R8 frame be moved up or down to move it out of line with the sprocket hole? Since we're talking about essentially a 16mm camera with a larger viable optical area, you could move the frame and extend it, creating an offset DS8 that used standard perfs.
Next question is what DR8 cameras are out there? I'm not familiar.
That's not to say that I still don't covet the Canon DS8 and intend on getting one once the household expenses are out of the way....

Most of them shoot 25' spools. As far as I can determine the only ones that shoot 100' spools are the Bolex H8, the Keystone and one Elmo.
ok, when i say more pro, im mostly talking about work that will be transfered to telecine.the latitude and speed aregreat for thise.
as for blow ups, i soke to some europeans that had their neg scanned and blown to 25 and they were amazed at the quality.
as for dr8 vs ds8: to order either of them is the same difficulty. yes the dr8 camera uses 16mm perfs but in twice the amount so for their perf machine to be told to print rows of 16mm perfs or 8mm perfs equates to being the same thing in terms of organizing the work. so, if the amount of effort is the same, i say go for the ds8...unless for some reason one is searching for the quality of a much smaller frame.

"Inferior quality " is a relative statement. People who shoot 16mm say the same about those shooting Super 8. 35mm users say the same about 16mm film. And 70mm users say the same about 35mm film. People who shoot regualr 8 say the same about video. At least I can say this: At least i'ts film which puts it in a completely different category than video.francis wrote:

my point is, if you are going to use 8mm film, why not use the largest area possible? if you have an option to either shoot standard 16 or super16 at the same price and ease, id say go for super16. why cut yourself out of something extra.
as for the ds8 and dr8, they are equally as difficult or easy to obtain.

Even Arri has made DS-8 cameras, based on the Arri ST version. no idea how the s8 to 35mm blowup was scanned. if i read spanish i could have had more info.
as for registration, the ds8 will be without a doubt far better than cartridge film. all things being equal..it will register far better. due to its design.
as for cameras, why go out and spend more money on a larger camera for ds8 conversion?the bolex can do just about anything the eclair can do. the arri would be interesting except that it cant take c mount lenses, wich are a great option since the zeiss c mounts are going cheap these days. do you really want russian technology? the olex has the sync and lens option amount others. id stick to them.
once again i have a ds8 yahoo group, let me know if you want on it.

My only problem with Bolexes is,while I have shot sync with them (moreso an EBM or Bolex Pro,but I have shot sync with a Rex,it was a pain in the butt),they're not really made for that.The Eclair ACL and NPR are designed for sync use.They use C mounts as well.francis wrote:no idea how the s8 to 35mm blowup was scanned. if i read spanish i could have had more info.
