Super 8 Transfer Unit

Post by perthskydiver »

Hello all,

I've been doing some film transfers to DVD lately (just projecting onto wall & shooting with a 3CCD camera). My workmate who has been shooting Super 8 for much longer than I have tells me there is a device which would give me better quality transfers. He said its basically a box where you project the film into one side & then point the video recording source into the other side. He said its quite cheap, roughly between $50-200. Does anyone know what he may be talking about?

yeah they show up on Ebay fairly regularly. They should be priced around £10-£40.
Basically as you said it's a box with a fold out semi-transparent screen and a mirror which you tilt at an angle. You project your movie onto the mirror and film off the screen with you camcorder.
There are people here who like and hate them in equal measure, though I find it easier to get a decent transfer of them, than off a wall.

I just threw two of them into the trash can the other week (too bad too since I see them on ebay for $40 or more!) - when you see a transfer on there and compare it to film you realize there has to be a better way. So far, the workprinter is the closest thing to "real life" as far as I am concerned. I am especially picky since much of my subject area involves water...and all the ripples gets lost in those boxes...

Those boxes suck. You'r much better off with projecting your film on a piece of paper on the wall.
