Transferring 9.5 mm format to Super 8

Yep guys,

I have a cup of rolls of old 9,5 mm movies from the late 1930´s to 1960´s. These films have historical scenes of my town.

I want to copy these films to S8 to preserve them.

So I´m looking for S8 film with the most finest grain and high resolving power. Kodak Plus-x could be the ideal stock, But Kahl film in Germany sells Kahl Dokument ISO 12 B&W reversal film. In their Web Page they say that this material it´s a Very - high contrast film, but idon´t know what´s mean "Film mit Gussfehlern". (There´s any German guy here?).

If someboy have shot Kahl Dokument 12, please, tell me how looks this film (grainness & sharpness).

In which country is your town ?

I have never shot any of the Kahl high contrast film, but I am sure that this stock is meant for making titles and traveling mattes for optical printing. Kodak makes a similiar stock that I have always used to make my 16mm titles. This type of stock is exactly opposite of what you are looking for. It is completely unsuitable for copying images due to its very high contrast. Instead of varying shades of gray inbetween black and white, everything will be rendered as either black or white. Plus-X is probably the best stock on the planet right now that you can shoot in a S-8mm camera for making copies of black and white film. If I were doing it and I had a DS-8mm Bolex available, I would try using the Fomopan 100 and flash the film before sending it in for development. Flashing helps reduce the contrast which is what you want in a copy filmstock along with high resolution and minimum grain. If Plus-X were available in DS-8mm then that would be my choice. To flash the film you typically want a 10% flash which means a reexposure of the filmstock to an unfocused Kodak white card at 10% of what a normal exposure would be. After shooting the images you want, reload the finished roll of film in the camera for another pass for flashing. Set up a Kodak white card and light it evenly. Either use an incedent meter to get the light reading, or use a combination of a Kodak grey card and reflective meter to get an accurate light reading for a normal exposure. The white card should just fill the frame and since the camera must be close to do this, just set the focus to infinity which will insure the image of the white card is out of focus. Remember, you did not want to film the image of the white card, you just wanted to reexpose the film 10%. Using the meter reading for the normal exposure, stop down the lens 3 1/3 stops. Shoot the entire roll of the underexposed out-of-focus white card and you have just flashed the film 10%. This will reduce the contrast of the developed film and that is what you want as in copying film contrast buildup is a major problem. If you shoot Plus-X cartridge film I am sure the results will be very acceptable. It sounds to me that you are doing a very worthwhile project and I wish you success.

I live in Villa María, a small town in the center of Argentina, between cows, wheat and soybean.

As you will know we´re passing a very bad situation. It´s a horrible irony which in a country that produces foods for 300 million people (we´re only 37 million) more than 50 % is in the extreme poverty, (many pass hunger) Just like the 1930´s Depression . Something never seen in our history! (Thanks, Globalization !!) :(

The 9.5 mm footage that I have, some (the olders) are very contrasted. The others are less contrasted.

David, I think that it´s very interesting what you say and will be very useful to me.

Heh.., apart from your "big bore" experience with Kahl :wink: would you mind sharing some of this so we know why it is so obvious to avoid Kahl?

It appears that Kodak."SCAN" sends all non K40 S8 to Kahl for processing? (not sure if it really is Kahl but I am pretty sure they send them to Germany so what alternatives are there?)

What alternatives are there to Kahl??

My relation with Kahl Film has been only for purchase their products. Personally I process and transfer to video my own films. For that reason I have nothing to say about the services that Kahl offers. Just can say that I obtained very good results with Kahl film material. Kahl 21 ISO 100 correctly exposed and processed looks like 16 mm. Kahl 27 ISO 400 is less grainy than Kodak Tri-X. and all this films are negative so they have more exposition latitude than reversal film. It´s just another choice.
I use reloadable Russian cartridges with this material loaded and NEVER I had problems of jittering.

ok, i've now reviewed this thread, counted to ten, calmed down, and found out the problem: it's clear that you completely misunderstood my original remark, possibly because of a language problem or my heavy use of profanity. if you just read it again, carefully, you'll see that all i'm saying is that the people at kahl film can't be trusted. i'm really sorry if you read it in some other way (even though i still can't see what that could be to be honest)...
