SUPER-8 PORN HISTORY

SUPER-8 PORN HISTORY
Super-8 was a rampant format in the Porn industry. Easily reproduced and cheap to shoot and the Porn Merchants had there own bulk load processors....So where did they all go?
Then there was the Porno Cinemas. The must have had projectors. Soho in London in the early 70's must have had Super-8 squirting out from all corners.
Some Merchant somewhere must still have a stash of the best Super-8 equipment money can buy.
......and is it wrong to shoot Porn to fund your work?...I'm joking but maybe some one out there wants to speak up.

DARK HISTORY
Super-8 dark History.
I saw a film of Super-8 a man choking himself.
He didn't die. Some thrill for someone.
New York punk Super-8 was to nasty.
Why talk about Porn anyway. You want to make it. Ninja 8O

College days
Freaky....Well I remember at college, this girl, a fellow student used to screen them (Pornos) with her Super-8 projector. We we're all studying hard no pun intended.
The quality was very poor and made the image even more trashy. Her idea was to defete porn by making a huge monage of images.
Needless to say when she screened her final piece all the boys were happy enough.

I am sure there are published literature on these histories but it's just we aren't looking in the right places. One thing that always puzzle me is the item description that pops up alongside of these items on Ebay. Such seller confidence but where are the sources? Might be worth investigating.

i wonder why there's no more porn on film . i don't really care about
porno in general, it's that the movies from the 70's were so unique.
when porn went to video the attitude changed as well (boogie nights ?)
the idea that nobody cares about the 'story' was a big mistake .
to just videotape people having sex is wayyyy boring . the "filmmakers"
who make this kind of junk obviously don't know or care. what really
happened in my conscience was that another independent film genre
died ( karate movies, horror films, industrial safety, john waters ,
paul morrissey , something weird video.....)
i can't sit through a hollyweird movie. ...makes me sick to
my stomach. gross.

Ahh, dirty movies. Where would the film industry be with out it. In the film "Boogie Nights" Burt Reynolds plays a producer who is struggling with the transition of going from "film" to "video" and the loss of image quality.
I also found it interesting that in some of the old adult film the actors wore little velvet masks to hide their faces.
If one were to make adult films (on real film) do you think it would be better to make it a "retro" type film (old hairstyles and make up and such) or just like a contemparary adult film?
I wonder if my local Wal-Mart woulod develope ThOSE file for $4.88?
Oh well, fantasy over, back to the real world.

Because film is expensive and time consuming. The demand today, which I think is fed by mass media and the religious right's constant use of porn as a political tool, has caused the industry to produce faster, cheaper and in mass bulk.Porn has also gotten more mainstream being backed by large multi mega conglomerates.
I shot the stuff back in the 70's.We shot loop films that went into the peep show machines. They were shot on 16mm and reduced to super 8 prints that went into large endless loop carts. The film was notched every 25 feet or so,so the machine would shut off, causing the viewer to have to deposit more money. They used to average pulling 125 to 200 dollars out of the machines in quarters a night.
I don't care for porn.It pisses me off.It starts out with a beautiful girl getting naked and doing everything she can to excite me.She kinda becomes my fantasy girlfriend. Then in comes this ugly guy with a big tool who has sex with my fantasy girl friend.Ticks me off.

I was watching a documentary about the history of porn the other week...interested in part because I have friends in that industry.
Porn is no longer shot on film because 99% of the time the final format is video. The porn cinemas have closed, and people enjoy porn in the privacy of their homes on VHS or DVD. That is what stopped porn being shot on film. For obvious reasons viewers prefer to watch porn at home.
I know the "Swedish Erotica" series of films were originally released on super 8 because they come up on eBay a lot of the time. I'd presume the porn film-makers would have used R4 and later E6 based Ektachrome so that they could have it processed at a private lab rather than Kodachrome. You can bet they used great equipment, indeed I've seen a Beaulieu 4800ZMII on eBay claimed to be one used to film John Holmes early in his career.
However I would imagine the cinemas were projecting off 16mm or even 35mm prints...the 8mm porn industry was mostly for people to watch at home on their projectors...take a look at any 1970's Penthouse mag, there were ads for cheap plasticky super 8 projectors in there.

I used an Arri 16SR when I shot loop films. They were shot on 7242 (ME-4)and 7240 and 7250.I talked them into shooting one of them on 7247 ECN once. They balked about going through the expense of a workprint and such but they were pleased with the results.I will add that in over 25 years of being behind a camera that was the only gig I have ever worked where I got paid more than the on camera talent.

Re: SUPER-8 PORN HISTORY
They show up regularly on ebay and you can easily catch a copy of Emanuelle from Derann...Astro wrote:So where did they all go?
Speaking to a market vendor the other day, he said they had been clearing a house and found a stash of movies. Half cartoons and half porns. He charged overprices for them because he could sell them to collectors...
I came across a "Topsy film" in a bulk buy once. 15 minutes of a guy with a mostache and a not so attractive girl having sex. We watch it when we get drunk and laugh at how ridiculous it looks.
Anyway, I think the're lots of these film around, but they are still kept in the back and you have to ask for them.
