Just won this baby on eBay

It's a Braun Nizo 4080 and it was only 10.50 Euro's - the battery compartment is broken but I should be able to fix that or work up an alternative.

It's in Germany so some friends are paying for me and are then going to get it sent out here. If it's as quiet as they say then I'll be using this for my dialogue on my next feature and save the ZMII for all the other shots.

Can't wait - it's hard to go wrong at that price!

certainly not a bad deal, but i hope you noted that it says:
"can't see through the lens"..

hopefully it's only a minor thing.
good luck

Always tempted to get a Nizo like this, maybe a 6080 'cos of the 200ft capacity. Quiet, nice aesthetic. I know pro8mm can crystal sync 'em too.

Anyone know what the viewfinders are like on these cameras, are they small, big?

What's the lens quality?

Yes hopefully that's just something simple. But at this price I can afford to put a bit of money into it to get it up and running.

About the crystal synch - we plan to do that ourselves - and I'll need it for the dialogue of course - my ZM2 is synched but just too noisy and I'd rather have another camera like this than try and barney the zm2

Hey Scot, I don’t know the 4080, but in the 801 there is a connection on the body for driving the motor using an external power source. I bought an AC-to-DC 800mA multi-voltage adapter and whittled the output plug to fit into the 801 socket. Works fine (problem for the 801 is that doesn’t supply the lightmeter; you still need the separate PX625s). It was about USD10. The original Braun accessory also shows up on eBay from time to time. I don’t know what “compartment broken” means, but perhaps if it is very serious, that’s an option. Good luck with it.

Thanks for that Steve - I've got a manual for the 6080 but haven't looked through that yet (apparently it's the same as for the 4080 accept for the extra mag capability).

Hopefully not being able to see through the lense is just caused by the camera stopping with the shutter in place when the power supply stuffed up -- we'll see.

I'm going to see if my friend in Germany can organise to get it serviced there before I get it here - more chance of a Nizo service agent there -- anyone know one? please let me know!

It’s interesting to speculate (or at least I’m enjoying speculating, and much more than the work I’m trying to shirk): My first guess was the same as yours here, as that would be a sensible diagnosis for a 4008 (not dyslexic; Beaulieu). But if the 4080 is split-image focus (and I think it is), I’d guess the prism is in front of the shutter. Obviously, you don’t have the camera in-hand, and I’ve never held one, and it’s pretty silly to speculate further. But here’s my very wild guess: I wonder if the camera was dropped or fell or suffered a blow in some way; that event knocked some part of the split-focus out and broke the handle, also breaking the power supply.

Could easily be worth EUR20, though; I don’t think that’s such a bad gamble, especially if I wanted a sound camera.

It’s also my hypothesis that everything in the Universe will eventually show up for sale on eBay: If this camera doesn’t work out, it’s ideal broken mate will eventually show up. It’s a corollary to Einstein. (Also: If you run into yourself first, probably you’ll also have the other camera you really need. I mean, who else? :) )

My Chinon has a small knob on the back, for mirror-location. Turned one-way, you see through the lens, turn the other, the mirror is moved out of the way, giving you more light to the film, but you can't see through the eyepiece then.

Yes I was kind of relying on that actually :?

But seriously
I’d guess the prism is in front of the shutter.
Yeah I think so too - but if the shutter was jammed if you looked back through the front lense would you not see black?

Don't know - I'll get my friend to assess it when he gets it and then send it off for fixing.

Hi,
I think the prism is definitely in front of the shutter...I guess so, because you cant see any shutter flickering(beaulieu like) during filming with Nizos..

Great camera. I have one, I bought about 15 years ago. I managed to get a braun/leica tech in the uk to go over mine and do some minor repairs, dry solder joints, etc. So I have a perfect specimen now! The viewfinder is a split prism style. So there is no mirrored shutter, so I would suspect maybe the the viewfinder path has been altered by being whacked at some point. The shutter position bears no relevance on what you can see through the viewfinder.
But great camera. Mine has a Schneider-Kreuznach 1.4/7-80 lens with a great macro. So it is a nice lens, great in low light situations. And the lens diameter is 67mm so getting filters is no hassle. I think this lens came standard in this model. It has a great built in timelapse system and lap-dissolve. Is very quiet. It also has a 25fps setting, which is great for PAL telecine. I shot a short film where we recorded on 1/4" nagra and slated the shots, then 'vary speeded' the tape decks in the edit, and we kept synch pretty well throughout, without a crystal, even on some fairly long takes. One piece of advice though, don't charge the battery packs within the camera itself. I have not done it myself, but was told they have a tendancy to explode! Also don't use 1.5v aa batteries. You need to use the 1.2v rechargeables, otherwise it can damage the light meter. It is a very tactile, easy to use camera. The split-focus viewfinder system is not as good for shooting 'on the fly' as the Beaulieu ground glass, but just takes some getting used to. It has the two different gauge mounts on the base for tripods also. the smaller domestic size and the larger (1/4" inch?) size for fluid head tripods. Hope it works out for you, probably worth getting checked out by someone. I went in to du-all camera here in NYC, and they have a nice one they are selling for $600 US. The tech I found in the UK is no longer in business unfortunately, but here is a snippet I found on the internet a while ago, I don't know if this guy is still working on Braun. Good Luck! -

Here is a recommendation taken from the newsgroups on a place to have your Braun-Nizo camera repaired:
The man you need to contact is called Kurt Schacherl in Germany. He's the most experienced person on the planet when it comes to fixing Braun Nizo Super 8 cameras. I've been to his workshop on the outskirts of Munich and his set-up is impressive. He basically bought all the spare parts from Braun's Munich factory when production of Super8 cameras ceased in the mid 1980s. He's about the only man alive who can completely strip down and rebuild a Nizo. Only problem is he doesn't speak much English and why should he? He lives in the German country-side. If you can find a friend who sprechens a bit of the old Deutsch then maybe it's worth a try. I certainly wouldn't trust any of my Nizo's to anyone else but Kurt. You can contact him at:
