About the new Kodak 500T stock film

Post by Carlos 8mm »

I was wondering if the new Kodak Vision 2 500 T is equal or less grainy than the actually Vision 200 T loaded in S8 cartridges.

But I hope that one day Kodak releases new B&W reversal or negative film stock based on T-Max technology.
I shot B&W negative stock from Kahl Film from Germany (I don´t know if this film material is Agfa or Orwo). Kahl 21 ISO 100 looks like 16 mm film!!

when I have used the reversal PLUS X black & white stuff and had a true telecine - it's grain is so fine, that it looks better than most 16mm footage.

CHECK THIS OUT :

http://www.triggerstreet.com - search for the shrot called SIMULACRUM

shot half with PLUS X, and TRI-X (the TRI X is for the darker, grainey shots, and the PLUS X is the sharp as hell daytime shots with loads of detail & crisp images.

(not actually a shameless plug, but a demonstration) -

in quicktime, also available here :

I had the black & white developed at FILM CRAFT LABS in Detroit and telecine'd at THE TRANSFERSTATION in California on a RANK CINTEL, and it was the best Super 8 vide transfer I had ever seen. It was really good Black & white footage.

If you have the light, the PLUS - X Reversal is just as good as ANYTHING negative stock for black & white.

i believe they've already considered this (for 16 and 35mm) quite recently, like a couple of years ago, and dropped it since it wouldn't give much improvement for the cost or whatever. search kodak.com for the complete report.

Hi Carlos,
Good to hear from you. What's going on ? are you working now ?
Vision 2 500T will have more grain than Vision 200T for shure. What did you expect ?
But I saw some on telecine ( spirit + DaVinci 2K ) on S16 that looked like 35mm. So ...
Kahl stock is Orwo UN54 100asa & N74 400 asa.

Hello.
Kodak now tours with its new Vision 2 and shows Film & Video
Demonstration. The Grain between 200 ASA and the new 500 ASA
stock are not different. Its now difference to see. Kodak offers
it with nearly the same granularity as 200 ASA ( 10 % more)
Also decide, that this new material can be used for 16/35 mm productions.
Greetings
Ludwig

Not sure ifthis really explains anything but it is from Kodak´s web site about the new 500:
Technology Innovations
What you'll notice first is the grain. You challenged us to 'improve the grain structure'. We went several steps beyond that.
We continue to make advancements with our proprietary 't-grain' technology - and we've built those improvements into this film.
In fact, we took the grain position of this true 500-speed film more than half way to that of a 200-speed product.

Hi all!!
Greetings from the from the ruins of Argentina!! (Yeah, we´re ruined, Globalization attacks again).

Matt, how are you?
In this moment I´m working in a documentary project (with super 8 shots, of course) about amateur sigers contests from the 50´s & 60´s in my city (A tale of desopilant guys!)
Thanks for your info about Kahl film stock.

Ludwig, if Vision 2 500 T is nearly grainy than Vision 200T, that´s a good news!! this meams that photographic emulsions improved day after day, (in spite of the digital era).

Carlos.
