I was wondering if anybody has some comments on the folowing modifications for a bauer projector:
A two bladed shutter; is supposed to enhance the light with 30%, which would equal it to a 200 watts bulb. Is this calculation correct? I'm interested in this one and would like to do it my self. Wonder if any of you can comment on if this is a complicated thing to do or not. I think it is just a matter of loosening and fastening screws AND of adjusting the shutter and filmclaw for to prevent strobing.
For you germans, what exactly is a "Drehmachine". Isn't this an electric screwdriver?; I suppose one could do it by hand as well?? One is supposed to use a "dreh.." for the modification.
Of less interest to me is a modification of the same projector to a 250 watts bulb. Modification will cost 150 Euro. Any disadvantages?, since the projector itself may not be adjusted to this kind of light. Modification will be done professionally.
I just like a bright picture. Wonder what a realistic upgrade would be and what are pro's and contra's.
Thanks,
Paul
P.S.
Has anybody got a Schneider Xenovar 1.1 11-30mm Bauer projection lens in stock;( projector optionally included ;) )
Thanks

"Drehbank" is a "lathe" says my dicionary. Its basicly a work top, where you can fix a round
piece of metal in horizontal postition and let it rotate at a certain constant speed. Now you can
apply any grinding tools from the side and thus shaping the metal.
When doing a 2 blade modification I only would choose a selectable 2-3 shutter. Even at 24 fps
the flicker with 2 blades is notable, much better with 3 blades.
THe Bauer shutter is rather complicated (2 shutter disks, claw mechanism must be taken off and
adjusted afterwards...) I would not try to do it by myself.
A 250 W lamp won´t give any notable increase in brightness. 150 W is the optimium for S8, any
brighter lamp only will heat and illuminate the projector or even make the projection dimmer.
Not only the wattage imports, but basicly the diameter of the bright spot inside the lamp and
the focussing of the lamp reflector to the film surface.
The only increase in brightness would be a HiPower lamp. (damn expensive)
The 1:1,1 lens for Bauer is not that good. 1:1,2 or 1:1,3 MC lenses produce a better image, more
sharpness, more contrast and more resolution. THe only thing the 1:1,1 lens does, is to show the
improper gate construction of Bauer: THe missing depth of field of this lens will cause sharpness
problems. THe borders or the centre of the frame is always out of focus!!! Terrible!

2/3 blades...
Hi Paul,
I made a shutter 2/3 blades for my bauer t600! Isn't too much difficult to make it. But the increase is about 20 %, not the 30%.
The bauer t600 is the brightest 150 w.projector! It drives the lamp at 16 v. not 15 The lamp dies before but you obtain more light!
With a two blade shutter, 220 v. (real) from the electric net (16 v. at the lamp), 1 m. screnn, 3 m. from the screnn... about 500 lux!
ciao

Paul,if you can track a f1.1 schneider lens down, buy it....ok its difficullt to get edge to edge sharpness.I have a f1.2 schneider and an f1.1..The f1.1 is a lot sharper than my f1.2,the 1.1 gives a cleaner image, better contrast.... I may have a lemon f1.2 lens.
After taking Pedros advice on cleaning the bauers gate etc, edge to edge sharpness much better now....the f1.1 is probably the finest 8mm projection lens!!
