Since I film in both R8 and S8, I am often frustrated by the differences in camera facilities.

Many R8 cameras have facilities that only a few of the very expensive S8 cameras posess: backwind, fading (and, thus, dissolves), for example. My Canon EEE Motor Zoom 8, for example is electric powered, with power zoom, two zoom ranges, focusing down to 2' (60 cm), calibrated backwind - as much as you like, auto/manual exposure with fade, and runs at 12, 16 and 24 fps with single frame. Which S8 camera has all this?

I wish they did a DS8 version. Still, I could shoot effects in R8 and print it up to S8 - that would be different!

So, R8 and Double 8 are the same thing, I can buy film on a 25' spool and flip it once having shot one side and if I prepay for the processing, then all I have to do is send it back to the supplier and they will process it for me....EXCELLENT! This site rocks!

Any other advice before I drop money on the ASA25 film and shoot? Is flipping the film difficult? How do I recognize which side I've shot? Do I need to be careful when I take the film out to flip it? How do you know which side of the film is being shot on and which needs shooting on?

Thank you all again for your patience with this beginner!

well, the spool with all the film on it is the side that has been shot, and the empty one isn't. sorry for making fun of you but the question is actually kind of hilarious if you know how it works. :-)

anyway, to be a little more helpful: the "flipping" is just another loading of the film just as with a fresh roll. you won't have to worry about which side gets exposed since it's handled automatically. picture the procedure in your head, possibly while studying a roll of film and it will become obvious...

Make sure there are film loops above and below the gate. On my B&H 220 et all the gate makes a loud snap when the film has been seated properly. Test the film in the gate before you close the camera by firing off a short burst or two or feel single frames go by with your finger.
