Kodachrome being DISCONTINUED!?

Post by Guest »

I can't believe my ears - KODACHROME IS BEING DISCONTINUED, according to a guy that spoke with a Kodak tech. Has anyone heard the official or not so official notice too? This basically reduces us to B&W as the only reversal stock left and perhaps a super 8 neg stock.

Ektachrome is officially kaput but Kodachrome? This is like Enron selling their "E" from the front of their building. Talk about ruining a brand (in every sense of the marketing concept.

Post if you can confirm.

K-40 can't be whacked as easily as Ektachrome. its the best seller worldwide. I refuse to be frightened by this ongoing rumor anymore. untill its on the Kodak product change notice, or from a reliable source then don't worry. the June Kodak product news should be posted soon.

I heard this too - something like an early 2005 discontinuation date. I hope it doesn't come to pass. Time to order some more film and ask about this. Perhaps someone was confusing ektachrome with kodachrome?

Why would you come to a forum to say such a thing just out of the blue? To invoke a response. I'd like to know who this guest is...

Not again. Please not again.

Start spreading "rumors" only if they come from Kodak respresantatives from several places worldwide at a time. ONE individual doesn´t know a thing. As we all know sometimes the left hand doesn´t know waht the right hand is doing - especially at Kodak.

Here's the official statement from Kodak (May 2004):
Kodachrome in 16mm and Super8 aswell as Ektachrome 100D 35mm will still be produced.

I think someone was confusing Kodachrome with Ektachrome.

Kodak have just redesigned and re-branded the Kodachrome slide film packaging too. I would expect communication within Kodak to be good enough tell the marketing people if a product was set to be discontinued.

Anybody who's been on this or any other film making form for more than a few months knows we hear this crap several times each year. Think this is the second time I've seen somebody positively tell me K'chrome is being axed in 2004 so far.

Kodak's most recentl official statement on the subject (last month I believe, or April) was that Kodahcrome super 8 and 16mm will continue.

If they totally axed all K'chrome a whole bunch of professional slide photographers would be up in arms. Quite simply as long as it makes some sort of profit Kodak wouldn't dare discontinue Kodachrome. It is the only film of it's type, it is the best known colour film, it is a fantastic trademark for them and it's far too widely used.

Hell they just updated the processing machines, why on earth would they discontinue the only film those expensive machines are used for?

I have my own theory that the digital brigade like to tell us that Kchrome will be axed every now and then in the hope of frightening newbies away from film...cannot see any other reason...that or they just enjoy seeing us deny the rumours.

Quite correct, some Kodak bods even think super 8 was discontinued years ago!

And as lastquark says, this stupid rumour has been circulating since at least the late 1980's. I well remember buying some K40 in 1987 to be warned by the shop that it might be discontinued soon!

It is quite possible that there are individuals within Big K who would like to see the end of Kodachrome, but it ain't gonna happen in the short or even medium term.

Bagpuss yawned but nothing was happening so he went right back to sleep.

None of his friends even bothered waking up.

I just spoke with the ghost of George Eastman, and he promised to me that Kodachrome films are still manufactured in the year 2525. 8)
