Hi,
I've read some old issues and read about the suggestion of buying a barney to help control the sound of cameras...
Can someone tell me what one of these things is - cause I'm just not familiar with the lingo.
What I'd really need to know is where/what kind of place would you get one from?
Or could you make one?
Forgive my ignorance.

Lingo Query: What is a "barney"?

Barneys are specially-designed custom enclosures, typically made of a heavy lead sheeting or other sound deadener, surrounded by acoustic-absorbing material, and stitched all together in leather or vinyl. They're designed to completely encompass the camera and can cut noise in half or even 1/4th.
As for professional barneys, it's hard to beat http://www.customupholsteryproducts.com. Those guys know their stuff.
For homemade barneys, you can just wrap the camera in a furniture pad (a type of blanket) and achieve a significant amount of sound reduction. Not near what a barney would do, but much better than nothing!

a blimp is usually a hard shell where air between it and the camera does the sound dampening, sort of like putting the camera in another room, while a barney is made from a soft material. i've seen the two used in each other's domain several times though, which might very well be a us/uk thing...wahiba wrote:I think this is US english - are they not blimps in UK english where a barney is a punch up in the pub!
