Yes after posting that I though Matt maybe it's a problem that goes back before the mpeg2 encoding - I'll look through some .avi files and the original telecines to see if it's visible there

Searching around on the net for more info on mixing etc I came across these two books - thought they might be of interest to others too

Haven't looked into it yet - but I'm thinking those lines may be caused by the image stabilisation software as I remember seeing it after doing that once (in the hut scenes) and I know the two progs I used both divided the picture up into small blocks for analysis -- will have to check into it though
