My first anamorphic 2.66:1 shooting test with super 8 camera

Post by jukkasil »

Yes!
Yesterday I received my K40 rolls back from Lausanne and after I managed to complete my harddisk installation (I have now 120 Gigabytes harddisk free space for editing!!), I transfered with my Workprinter a little part of my anamorphic shooting test roll and made this page of it:

http://www.sorb-i-tol.com/super8cinemascopetest.html

There is also one mpg-videofile and I'll make more, when I'll have free time to do them.

I also made divx-format avi-file of this same footage with 1532x576 (!) resolution, but had little problems to open it right with different kind of windows-versions. With win98SE it plays ok, but with win2000 it has white noise at the right side of picture.

If any of you want to see this file too, let my know, I'll put it to my server too.

Note: This was my first AM shooting test. I have already bought better AM-lens (this first AM setup costed me about 35 USD), Muller anamorphot with 71 mm rear diameter.

I'll install it to my Bauer s 709 XL and 715 XL camera (both and perhaps also Bauer Roal 10 and Leicina super rt, have to design couple different setups) and I'll continue to testing also these cameras with AM-lens.
Best Regards

Stunning setup Jukkasil, but why go to all that trouble to have the end product scannend to television 16.9 or otherwise. You are not realising your equipments capabilities.Nowhere near.
Do you actually project anamorphic films? If you dont, then start now and forget the telly.

I think there will be some kind of misunderstanding from your side "Old Uncle Barry".

Have I mentioned something about television in my first message?

This test was a part of my final target.

My final target is:

- To shoot anamorphic with super 8 camera

- To project anamorphic footage with super 8 projector (I tried it yesterday and it looks just great!)

- To transfer my AM footage to digital with my Workprinter-3 machine

- Edit them with PC in unscaled mode

- Export completed material to DV in both unscaled and scaled versions

- Project anamorphic unscaled and edited material with videoprojector with same AM lens installed

- Distributing my footage in the rigth aspect ratio from my internet-site, in mpg and maybe mpeg4/divx avi-files. This scaled version is only for these needs.

Of course I haven't any other way to show my AM footage with Television, so I have to scaled them. But this isn't the number 1 prioirity for me.

I'm also planning to build my own home theather ( I have 50 m2 free space waiting me to start building it!) during couple next years and this anamorphing thing is very close to that project too.

Summa Summarum:

My finally target is absolutely projecting anamorphic footage, by analog (super 8 ) and some kind of digital way (videoprojector) too. I already have equipment to do this all, so of course I'll try it!

To putting footage in letterbox mpg-file is only way I know this time to make mpg-file with this anamorphic material. I made it only for example for people like you here in 8 mm forum.

There isn't any other reasons, I'm not going to show these ultra wide stuff to my family etc. through 4:3 television, not even 16:9!

I have managed to do almost everything, but haven't had time to check this videoprojector case, which I'll find out during next week and let you all known then.

I know this AM-shooting/digitalediting-combination would sound not so common thing.

BUT: The first of all, it's just pure fun, I'll learn all the time more about shooting itself and also making personal camera setups etc.

Yes, you can put anamorphic lens to your Nizo. I'm not sure the front diameter of lens in these type of Nizos, but I think Proskar, Sankor, Kowa and B&H lens (= Kowa) could fit that very well.

Just check from ebay these ones, there are right now many of open auctions.

At the first check the front diameter of your camera lens. Then ask seller, the rear diameter of his lens and if it's bigger than the front diameter of lens at camera, then you'd try to bid it. Good luck!

Anyway, remember: my test lens (proskar) has smaller rear diameter than my camera's lens (Leicina super rt) front one is!
