Cheap film in the UK ?? !! ?? !! The end of an era for me.

Good point Rick. I didn't think there was a difference. You would still be saving money though buying K40A alone from the US. I could order from Kodak by telephone and probably get some BS student discount (I am a student, only a still photography student rather than a cine one). I don't know how the mailer thing works in Europe. Do you mean to tell me that a PK-59 is void outside of the US? I thought they were all shipped to Switzerland anyway, unless the whole Dwayne's conspiracy theory holds water. Er, now that I read (red) your posts a second time I see that they are all prepaid with a mailer inside. I guess this does pose a problem. Is there anyway you could use PK-59s? I believe they go for about $5.59 at BH Photo Video in New York (~Lb. 3.10 (3 and 2 shilling)). Of course. You could always channel film back over here and I'd be happy to drop a shitload off at Wal-Mart and get them processed for $4.99, albeit with some delay as the stuff doesn't always get to Dwaynes on the first try. I'd just love to see the looks on those guys' faces when I bring in 100 50-footers of K40 though; it'd certainly generate buzz about the S8 format :lol: I seriously would be willing to undertake a project of that nature if you are interested in doing something such as this. Again, it would have to be a bulk load of the stuff to be financially feasible with shipping to the US and back to the UK. It's definitely worth a shot if enough of you Brits are interested.

Just a quick reply from photmart regarding my dislike to their price increase and they will loose my custom

Thank you for your email , unfortunately we use to sell the 8MM very cheap because we import it from Europe but now Kodak they stop our source from where we use to buy at the same time just to inform you that we are gaining new customer every day and they appreciate Photomart services.

K40 costs less in the USA because it is ALWAYS process NOT included, in Europe it is, instead.

If you buy a 'shitload' of K40's, you'll certainly have to pay import duties when entering our continent; in addition to shipping charges and processing fee, it may all well end up with costing the same (if not more) as what we usually pay.

Not so, Maurizio. At least, that's not true for K40 in Super 8. CAT 505 3335 includes processing. I bought some about a year ago direct from Kodak. I think it was in the neighborhood of $13.50 per cartridge in quantities of a dozen or more.

You can buy it without processing, too, if you really want to do it that way. In that case, I think it's about $10.83 per roll. I can't think of a good reason to do that, though, since processing will definitely cost you more than the $2.50 difference in price per roll.

Photomart were really a wholesale company, stocking the shelves of small photo-labs around the UK. I'd like to find such a wholesaler in cheaper parts of Europe, where I think the prices may be semi-comparable to the old Photomart prices. Photomart were actually "much" cheaper than Kodak themselves, even for bulk.

Kodak have never talked about minimum order to me, although it is concievable that if you wanted to buy only one cartridge they would want to charge for postage, which they don't do normally.

I don't really know what the debate is all about - Has anyone telephoned them on the number I listed earlier in this post and asked them?

I spoke to them last week as they have a have a couple of jammed K40 cartridges they are replacing for me. They are good to deal with - you can have a deal with them and there is a technical dept. aswell.

Looking through some old catalogues, the price of S8 KII in 1972 was Ã‚Â£2.00 per cassette. Official UK inflation figures give a rise of around 10x over these 32 years - although essentials like beer and fags (and houses) have gone up by around 20 x.

Current K40 prices seem reasonable on that basis - but we don't want Kodak to find out.

lol. Those essentials of beer, fags and houses are truly a rip-off in Britain. What are 10X inflation figures based on then? Food?

If film's gone up by 7X, that's not bad I guess, but I still want to find a cheaper wholesaler.

The interesting question is: why the 20% hike in K40 prices over the year? Does this indicate a longer-term committment involving replacement of worn equipment? Or just Kodak being in deep doo-doo and milking the products that do sell?

I expect the 10x inflation is based on the actual inflation figures which are freely available from the government online. Sounds pretty likely to me.

K40 hasn't risen by 20% anywhere that I buy it, the increase at 7dayshop was 2.6%.....didn't Kodak just increase the price to retailersby 5% last December? Seems reasonable given that they had kept the price constant for some years prior to that.

As far as I can tell the only people who have had a massive hike are Photomart...but I could be wrong.

its amazing to see that it would be cheaper to buy the film here in australia and to ship it to the uk...but then again...people in the uk are buying mg's ans lotuses in japan and shipping them back to save a bundle
