8mm or Super 8 film?

8mm or Super 8 film?
I have just purchased an old Canon 8mm Zoom Movie Camera and a Bell & Howell 8mm Movie Camera, model#414.
I am starting to collect old, working items that I will soon use to start filming with. My question for anyone that may know the answer to is, can I still obtain 8mm film (suitable for the above camera's) and if so, what film would be suitable? Both camera's appear to be in excellent working condition and I am very keen to start shooting film with them.
Can anyone help with any info? I would really appreciate any advice
Thank you and may I say that this is a wonderful site!
Keep up the good work

To purchase film for your regular 8 camera(s) visit:
http://members.aol.com/Super8mm/JohnSchwind2.html/
Try the cinechrome 25 (25ft spool will fit your camera).
Many people still shoot regular 8 and enjoy it. The Canon will probably produce the best results due to superior optics but the Bell & Howell 414 is probably my favorite 8mm camera (next to a Bolex P1). The Kennedy assassination was captured by Abraham Zapruder using a Bell & Howell 414PD. It is a rugged and compact camera. Do ytou have a manual that tells you how to load the camera(s) etc...?

I shoot both.
Regular 8 is easier to feed into the developing tank. Many cameras are fully manual so you have total control.
Super 8 is easier to change mid reel. Most cameras are electric automatics (with one exception).
Kodachrome super-8 can stil be bought on the High Street and takes a week to Switzerland and back.
Regular-8 needs specialist suppliers
http://simplycine.co.uk
http://widescreencentre.co.uk
are two UK sources.

This is great! Thank you everyone!
I don't have the manuals and was wondering where I can get them from? I am looking at buying another 414 on Ebay because they're so cheap and they're exactly what I am looking for!
The link to the supplier for film in CA is perfect. He is cheaper than most people I have seen. Thank you
Do you have any further advice before I go ahead and buy some film for these cameras? What make? What type? What speed? B/W or Color? Any preference or prejudice against a certain type of film? HELP!!!!!!!

Super 8 has 72 frames per foot and is shot at 18 fps
Regular 8 has 80 frmaes per foot and is shot at 16 fps
So for 50 feet of super 8 one gets 200 seconds ( 3m 20s) and for regualr 8 250 seconds ( 4m 10s)
So in value for money quantity R8 wins!

My advice is to just purchase some;CineCHROME 25 Daylight ASA 25-25ft
International film has it for a reasonable price with or without processing.
Their address is: http://members.aol.com/Super8mm/JohnSchwind2.html/
If you want to purchase another camera have you considered a Bolex P1?
Check one out here:

EARLY NEXT WEEK I'LL TRY TO SCAN THE B&H 414 MANUAL FOR
YOU!!!
STAY TUNED!!!

Can I use the "CineCHROME 25 Daylight ASA 25-25ft" on both cameras?
And what is the advantage of paying for processing in advance? After purchasing and shooting, does it mean I can send it back to them for processing? I know it sounds like I'm quite stupid but having started from scratch I'm learning the hardway. Rather this than a baptism by fire!
Thanks guys, you have been really helpful. What a wonderful site. I am learning so much more than I could hope. Thank you
Regular 8 Freak, thanks for the offer to scan the manual. How long have you been using the 414? What are your prefered preferences?
And another stupid 'Q'....What's the deal with being able to flip a 25' roll after shooting? Can that be done with R8 film or is that specific to double 8? And what's the difference? Is there R8 film or R8 Double? Can you use both with the cameras that I have? So many Q's, I'm sure you're all fed up with answering them time and time again....

Gobo asked:
Do you flip R8 film or just Double 8?
Yes you flip the film once after filming on the first 25'.
Regular 8 and double 8 are the same thing.
Can I use the "CineCHROME 25 Daylight ASA 25-25ft" on both cameras?
Yes as long as they are both regular 8mm cameras like you said.
What is the advantage of paying for processing in advance?
None except you don't have to worry about it after purchasing. The
price may be a little better . I always use Dwaynes for my processing.
