Kodak just told me K-40 is discontinued

Last week I ordered some Kodachrome rolls direct from Kodak. Yesterday when they arrived I was surprised to find that the rolls they sent me were expired. They were marked "process by 3/2004".

I'm sure the rolls are safe to shoot, but I called them today anyway. They put me through to the "technical" department and they explained that all of their color reversal stocks are discontinued and they're just selling their remaining stock.

I hope it's not true and it's just the Ektachrome that's getting the axe.

Very odd, as I just shot several rolls dated 07/2005. And the folk I have talked to have mentioned expanding kodachrome production.

Maybe the warehouse cracked an old case by accident. Hopefully the technical people were just being dicks so they didn't have to take my expired rolls back. They don't like taking returns at Kodak no matter what. I'd rather shoot expired rolls than see the stock discontinued.

But I do remember a post regarding Dwayne's that mentioned about rumors of K-40 being discontinued. It might have been on the Wal Mart thread.

It could be a consolidation, dumping K-40 but filling the gap with K-64 or K-200.

I got some 3/2004 K40 from B&H about a month ago. I have it in the freezer, and they said it should be fine if processed this summer. They said there was a problem with short-dated super 8 stock. They offered to take it back, but I figured I'd just plan on shooting it ASAP.

Don't panic yet, but if you need the location of a few bell towers, let me know.

I'm placing order for 20 carts today. Let's see what happens. They just recently introduced new stocks. It could just be a late April fools joke or rumors being spread by the DV supporters.

i have used kodachrome 15 years out of date, the boxs had not been opened.. and it looked great..
i shot a bbc timewatch doco last year,about a ww2 fighter pilot.
i had some 5 year out of date k40 16mm,that had fungus growing on it because my fridge had de-frosted..leaving the unexposed stock swimming in water...
i left it on a window ledge to dry,and used it in a poppy field in malta it looked shit.. no it looked beautiful.. that films tough..
k40 will only go if we stop using it..
if kodak were to cancel it, the american courts have this lovely thing called a class action! we could become very rich maybe share an out of court settlement ..how does 950 million dollars sound.

The left hand doens't know what the right hand is doing -- I was once told in no uncertain terms by a Kodak employee that Kodak doesn't support Super 8 anymore - he was very embarassed and apologetic when I gave hime some catalogue numbers - how this company ever got so big is beyond me -- and I think if K40 ever went someown would step into the breach and introduce something

coulda been great but the possibly bad news is that Fuji quit the soundstriping simoultanesly with Kodak in 1997. belive Fuji watch Kodak so "if they quit - we quit."

not too encouraging in my viewfinder.

I too recently bought a batch of K40 and it was all 07/2005, my response to any announcement that Kodak were about to cancel K40 would be tempered by whether or not they were going to provide me with an alternative process paid reversal stock (however unlikely that may be). What Kodak expects most of us to do with colour negative I have no idea. The stock is more expensive to buy in the first place and on top of that you have the added hassle of finding a decent lab to process it - not to mention the additional cost of processing! Then on top of that you further hassle of acquiring telecine services which leads to - guess what - further additional cost! Marvellous. K40 itself is - in my opinion - just (and only just) affordable enough to encourage people to take it up for the purposes of experimenting with film and the convenience of prepaid Kodak processing plays an enormous part in this equation. In addition to this it has the good fortune to be capable of producing stunning results. K40 makes cine accessible in a way that no other stock does.

Unfortunately, someone tried almost the exact same thing when Kodachrome got axed in large format back in the '40s. There was a photographer who used 8x10 Kodachrome (I get excited just thinking about that!) for all of his shots and maybe some smaller stuff, but at that time small format was much worse quality than it is now, so most portraiture was 4x5 or 8x10. Anyhow, he filed a lawsuit against Kodak saying that Kodak's discontinuance of Kodachrome 8x10 hurt his business and ability to take high-quality pictures and the usual jazz. He lost. Kodak said that there were other products available that he could use and the discontinuation of a product was Kodak's own business in its defense. If only the courts would have known what shit the E-2 and E-4 films were in terms of archivability, the case probably would have had a much different verdict :lol: I believe the story was on Photo.net somewhere when I read it, so you'll get a straighter version if you go there and look for it, but I think I gave you all the jist of it.

P.S. I voted for the belltower thing, but only because there were no other gun options available. I would have definitely picked a choice such as: Go to Kodak's main office in Rochester with an AK-47 and "shoot some footage".

Just kidding John. If someone were to do that though, you guys in the film department should drape some movie film over your office doors, just in case :lol:
