I'll believe it when people here (or on Hostboard) have actually bought and used the stuff.

Did anyone ever release a R8 camera that could record audio?

Don't know, but, I do have an old R8mm sound reader that sort of fits around a projector; that is, a projector sits on top of the amp and a big arm sticks up that the film goes through to read/record audio on a sound stripe. The bottom of the arm is cast aluminum and broke off. Epoxy it? It used to use a Sears projector that I sold before getting this thing broken in the mail. I think it could work.

Regular 8mm magnetic sound came in during the early '60s. One early sound projector was the Silma Sonic 8 which had a really heavy-duty mechanism and valve electronics. Qite a few R8 commercial sound films were produced.

Some later dual-gauge sound projectors, such as the Eumig 810s would play both R8 and S8 sound.

I do not know of a R8 sound camera.

Fairchild made a really beautiful camera and projector combo that had excellent sound and picture. A client had one years ago, long before super 8 sound, and it was astonishing in the clarity of the sound and the quality of the image. I doubt that Fairchild made it themselve but it had their name on it. All metal and chrome with red and turquoise trim. Gorgeous.

The Fairchild R-8mm sound camera and projector were absolutely beautiful. I owned both for many years, but never resurrected
the camera due to the internal battery having leaked destroying the wiring and electronics inside. The battery was a rechargeable one that was inside the camera and not accessable without disassembling the camera as I recall. That is why I doubt if there is a working camera still around. What a shame. The projector is a marvel. The quietest and smoothest running R-8mm projector I have ever seen. I eventually sold mine to a gentleman who owned many R-8mm sound films and needed a good R-8mm sound projector. Wish I had kept it, but I know he must enjoy it. By the way, I think Fairchild made these units because during this period they made lots of specialized film gear including 16mm gun cameras, high speed 16mm cameras etc. The R-8mm sound units have incredible build quality and the one-of-a-kind style doesn't feel like a rebadged unit. But I could easily be wrong. Either way, the camera and projector were a syling and functional masterpiece.

Fairchild, the airplane maker? Camera guns logical?

If you still have that camera there may be some simple solutions to recover it if not totaly damaged.

CRC electronics cleaner and contact cleaner + various CRC after treatment possible:

Step 1 is to clean out everything possible with a slight base/water solution.

After flushed in plain water and dried the CRCs may go a good job. "Repaired" a celluar phone that had a decent swim in sea water.

I flushed it in plain water, dried and treated it with contact cleaner and it came into operation again. It took about 14 days before it gained "full control" (all funtions working) so do not give up in the first turn!.

Actually I "repaired" 2 cellulars this way.
