Hey Paul, it's possible that certain kinds of shots will look perfectly fine to you when you do your transfer. A close-up may look fine, a low contrast scene may look fine.

What probably won't look fine are normal contrast scenes and wider angle shots. Can you tell us what kind of footage you have already transferred?

As Im sure you can tell Im a complete novice so maybe (mattias) perfect is a relative term.
Ive shot Tri-x K40 and vision 200T. I know a gut who does wedding videos etc. he has a very good set up. So in a fully blacked out room I project with a good nizo projector (great bulb and lens) and he films from a suitable quality print paper taped to the wall using a beta cam.
On tv or on the moniter there is no decernable difference.

This is why I ask the question, I mean I want to learn more and Im prepared to spend the money and buy good quality equipment but I need to know why...if you know what I mean.

It took me a long time to be able to see differences in transfers, but I didn't start with a Betacam, whew.
VCD vrs SVCD was a learning experience.
Wall paper vrs imaging directly off film is noticable.
Some day I'll be able to look at Hi-8 vrs miniDV or better yet
one ccd vrs 3 ccd.

I'd like to see a off the wall Betacam of S8 vrs a 3ccd miniDV workprint xfer S8 shoot out.

So I shooet super8 for kicks nothing more, should I bother buying a work printer also transfering negative film stocks, can this be done at home in a way that is reasonable good??

Well, that depends on how many kicks you want:)
I'm pretty much in the same boat only using 16mm which I am limited to shooting off the wall with Hi-8 video.
Negative transfers will have more of a dirt and dust problem which will cause white dots if present. Triple clean conditions and cleaning of the film more than one time will be necessary.
I want a 16mm WorkPrinter next to my 8mm one.
3ccd first. If you already have Betacam, go for it.
