Correctly exposing Tri-X 7278

Post by Medium8 »

I am making an important film and don't want to make a mistake. My camera is a Focal XL-303. Can someone reassure me that my camera (no manual exposure option) will adjust to the correct ASA? There is a pin above the gate to the right that when pressed in opens up the aperture, I guess to let more light through to the film when the old family Fav K40 is being exposed. The TRI-X cartridge has a notch in it so this pin isn't engaged-- so less light gets through as I would expect for the higher ASA rating.
Am I on the right track with this. I'm paraniod I'm going to get a over exposed mess. Any feed back appreciated.

If your camera is capable of exposing 160 ASA film you should do fine. (and I can't imagine an "XL" camera not being capable of doing this.)

More ASA requires less light to reach the same level of exposure, so the fact that the camera seems to allow less light in for TRI-X than K-40 is probably a healthy indication for your camera.

Life offers few guarantees, and only ones that are full of exceptions. However, I think you will do fine!

Hi,

Martin Baumgarten has explained these matters in depth:

btw: Martin's own pages are currently down. If you want to read also those older articles that are referred to on that previous discussion, perhaps they could be found from google's page cache. Try " baumgarten tri-x 160 asa"

hope this helps
