Re: Shuterspeeds for neg

well, it obviously doesn't affect the actual grain size, but i can imagine it has some effect on perceived grain. my theory would be that larger angle means longer exposure means more motion blur means more "smooth" and "medium gray" areas in the frame means more visible grain, while a smaller angle would mean shorter exposure, less blur, more contrast and detail, and thus less visible grain. i haven't tested this in any formal way though.

Most of the shooting I have done with Neg stocks has been with a standard 180 degree shutter on my S16. I think that bothe the 200T and 320T is some of the finest looking Telecined films made by Kodak. You might want to still look into 250T, 400T and the 500T by Fuji.

Good Luck

Ok thanks, I have now tried to shoot the V200T with both 150° and 220° shutters to try to find out if there is any difference. Same with the 250D and the 500T.

Beliveing they may be too grainy for S8 to spot any noticeable difference but based on your info there may still be a difference. Hoping PRO8 will do a proper job so there might be possible to see it if any.

Tnx.

Really looking forward go see the 200/500T results.

Now regarding the Fuji stock I would really like to try that too but it is, to my knowledge, not available for S8 which is my favorite film format.

Alawys liked the Fuji neg stock for 35mm SLR photo. For many years I used the Fuji Photo 800ASA "Professional" neg stock and that in fact turned even my small compact 35mm into a flash shot champion with no grain prints.

The grain seemed no more than contemporary Kodak 100ASA stocks on my photo gear. No professional gear though, the high end is a Dynax 500Si.

If someone decides to make PRO8mm split of some fuji motion neg stock and I can get hold of it I will give it a try for sure.

THANKS

Post by S8 Booster »

Big THANKS to everybody who contributed and shared their useful and interesting know-how on the neg films.!!

I will edit & post samples when I get my films back on MiniDV format as both film clips and extract big pix film frames to try to share the grain and exposure issues etc.

Found out

Post by S8 Booster »

The origin of the V200T incorrect 85 filter notch:

Also, I have learnt from Kodak that the Vision 200T has always been notched in this way. This is because the film (originally called 'Surveillance Film') was manufactured only for use in a special Kodak time-lapse camera to record surveillance images in the Pentagon and in a Japanese chain of banks. These cameras did not have any filter built in because they were always to be used in Tungsten light, so the original simplified moulding for the cartridge is obviously still being used today.

This explenation seems a bit odd to me, mainly because since then the cartridges have been changed, the jitter issue has been fixed, and besides that the old and new cartridges I have seen have slightly different markings, etc... although I haven't seen old 200T carts.

S8Booster: What ever happened to seeing results from these tests?

Hi Jessh.

Regarding the results I got them back yesterday actually.
I will post some samples soon.
Quite a few surprises to me but they were all good with some minor reservation for the 50D.
