FPS questions

Post by Smurf »

Hey hey hey,
I've got a few questions, I got some old movie fil and I don't know what its shot on, but lets just say its shot at 24fps, is this normal speed? Cause I put them in my Bell + Howell projector and the thing is so slow like alsmost slow motion. Does this mean its shot at 18fps or is it that my projector doesn't have varible speeds? Thanks, any help is greatly appreciated. Let me know what normal motion speed is. And what to project it as too.

"Normal", or rather most common projection speed is 18 fps.

If you film is shot at 24 fps it will appear in slow motion.

A lot of consumer projectors only project 18fps.

So if my projector "normal speed" is 18fps, and I have film shot in 24fps, most likey it is shown in "slow motion"? So normal speed is 18 fps?
Thanks!

If you tell us the type of projector you have someóne could tell you precisely.

If your projector only has a Run/Stop option it's most likely 18 fps.

Whats normal speed with sound or dubbing over with sound? In other word if i shoot something and want to dub voices in what would be the best speed to shoot in? Cause on my Canon 1014xl manual it says to film in 24fps when sound is being added, but it runs too slow...so 18 fps is normal speed, as to say a regular video camera? It's all to confusing to me right now but its probably something stupid. Did any one ever have trouble with shooting in 18fps and adding sound during post production? Thanks again! Everyone is such big help! I appreciate it, I really honestly do!

Basically, if you shoot your film then project at the same speed that you shot at, that would actually be considered normal speed. 24 FPS is considered "professional", 18 FPS is considered a consumer speed and you get an extra 50 seconds of film time when you shoot at 18 rather than 24.

You are better off owning a projector that projects at both 24 and 18 frames per second if you can afford to get one.

Video camera's run at 25 for Pal and 29.97 for NTSC or as we Pal users like to call it (Never Twice The Same Color)

I apoligize if i got the NTSC FPS wrong... i get a little confused if its 30 frames , 29.97, non drop frames or drop frames??

Maybe some-one can clear this up with me...

Cheers

Mark

Jim what device are you recording the audio on to ?

Has your projector been used regularly over the years? I recently resurrected a projector found in a dump and it ran slow (about half to one third speed) for the first hour or so...now runs fine with infinately variable speeds from about 16 to 25 fps.

Could be a worn motor causes it to run slow.....even check that the voltage is correct. Your projector may well accept many voltages from 100 to 250V with an adjuster somewhere.

I have been recording on DAT for quite some time now. I've work in feild recording for over 5 years.

About the projector being "old" it is infact a very old super8 projector, I bought it for like 5 bucks still in the box with the feature tag on it and every thing. It looks like no one ever opened the thing either. Its still brand new looking.
Thanks everyone, I'll get this figured out sooner or later!
