Nizo S-800 & Double System Sound

Post by gkaplan57 »

Hello: Are the Nizo S-800 or 801 super 8 cameras very noisy? Would it be realistic to record sound with a Sennheiser ME 66 directional mic? NOT camera mounted but boom mounted. How many feet away from the camera would you need to be?

I have decided on a Nizo (Nizo 4080 looks good too!) or a Canon 814XLS. So, any info on a camera that is suitable to be used with sound recording would be very helpfull. In the end I may end up getting a "sound" camera just to make sure that the motor noise is not going to ruin the audio, but the Nizo S-800 and 801 are two of my favorites - right now. Could change any minute. Decided against a Beaulieu, but if you want to compare the Beaulieu to the Canon's and Nizo's I would find that interesting. Might change my mind...

I am new to this list and this is the first post, but as soon as I go through the entire list I'll hold the other questions.

Thanks

Hi Larry,
I've got both a Nizo 801macro and a Nizo 6080. The latter, which I assume to be as noisy as the 4080, is definitely quieter than the 801.
I have never used a Beaulieu camera, but I've read that the 4008 series are very noisy.
I have used some Canon cameras (514, 814) and they proved to be noisier than the Nizos.
I suppose that with a directional microphone you wouldn't have problems even with the 801, but my 6080, at 25 fps, is really quiet.

Nizo noise

Larry-

I've got a 4056 and I have sound problems (using a boom-mounted mic) when I get within about 6 feet of the mic. A towel draped over the camera helps a little. The sound is more of a problem at the beginning of a roll than at the end for some reason. Can anyone explain this?

I can try, dont know if my explenation will be correct though :-)
Inside the super8 cartridge there are 2 sides one side starts with a full roll of film and the other side has the takeup spool, when your camera starts out it has the full load on the source side and near the end the load has been taken up which would result in a lot less load on the claw which is taking most of the burden of pulling the film from the source side. Seems to me that taking up the slack in the cartridge might help a little bit, not much though.
