Anamorphic !?
It maybe is a silly and simple question, but I still wonder. Can someone tell me in a few words what anamorphic means ? :?
Hi,
Anamorphic means 'able to transform abnormally'. Basically, and anamorphic lens magnifies (or squashes, depending on direction) an image in one direction only.
Anamorphic lenses are used for wide screen formats, like Cinemascope. They squash the image widthwise onto the film in the camera, then spread it out again from the projector.
Anamorphic lenses are specified by the amount of squashing. The main ones are: full Cinemascope, 2:1 (so the screen is 8 x 3 not 4 x 3), modern scope, 1.75:1, widescreen TV, 1.3:1 (giving a 16 x 9 screen - ugh!).
2:1 lenses projector are quite cheap these days, and some work fine in front of super8 camera lenses. Filming in full 'scope is great for outdoor scenic subjects, and items such as trains, planes and ships.
Tim.

Going back before film/photography was invented, artists created what was known as anamorphic engravings with the subject matter squeezed in laterally-as is the frame of film.
To view their product they created a highly polished cylindrical tube, polished on the outside I must add, placed on the drawing in the centre and the ensuing image was correct. It was walked around or turned round (depending on its size) and what you saw on the tube was uncompressed.
Not a lot of people know that!
