DS8 cameras

Post by bakanotlogged »

So the perforater is on the way.
But what about the cameras to go with it?
So far I can only think of three double super 8 cameras all of which seem quite hard to find am I missing something?
Bolex H8/H16 converted
Canon DS8 Scoopic
and my pick
Pathe DS8
is there a more readily available solution?

(oh yeah make that four. The quartz/zenit ds8 any others?)

There's also the Elmo trifilmatic with a Double Super 8 back. And there are 2 different Quarz (Zenit) DS8 cameras as I have both, the DS8-3 (reflex zoom lens) and the DS8-M (fixed lens with tele/wide converters). Lastly I've seen a Meopta(?) DS8 too. These last ones use the small 8mm spools and I believe Paul has already stated that you would have to supply him with the spools/cans to get his DS8 film.

BTW: I do have a Canon Scoopic DS8 (and I really love it) and would like to have two further 12V battery magazines that are usually attached on top of the camera.

Does anyone know where I can get these? If someone has no use for them and wants to sell them send me a PM.

Thanks,

yes the elmo c-300 is really a masterpiece, what a great camera, i dont have one, but i know it's mechanics.

I own a quarz ds8 too and it works quite good, sometimes it has some flicke, but it's easy to adjust it, it's a very simplke camera anyone can do that.

The canon is always a good choice.

The bolex too.

It's hard to choose between all these cameras, they all have their good spots.

I love my Canons. Except that my most recent aquisition's light meter doesn't work ("it worked perfectly when I shipped it...") So much for "bulletproof."

The Bolex is cool, but they always seem awkward to me. I've thought that I way just use mine for timelapse stuff (if anyone has a timelapse/animation motor they'd like to trade for an ESM motor, let me know.)

Honestly, though, I love the Pathes. I've got one with the Ang. 6-90, and I'm just waiting for something to shoot with it. I've been using the Canons with some Fomapan for shooting live music stuff. Easier cams for run and gun shooting. But the Pathe just seems like a "real" camera to me.

I need Paul to do this. I'm very excited. I've got too many DS8 cameras!

The only one I don't have is an Elmo, and honestly, the only upside I could see to one of those is the magazine interchangability/ flipping.

Keep in mind that there's two models of Pathe DS8- The Weboflex (spring wound) and the reporter (electric/ BTL meter.)

Too bad nobody made one with a mirror shutter.

BTW- Any suggestions where one could get a Canon DS8's lightmeter fixed (and/or a general overhaul) on the left coast?

Ron at UTphoto can set your camera right. He services Scoopics so I'm bet he can handle the DS8. He's got a website, I'm sure a google search will lark it out.

Hai there,

Is there anybody who put some nice photo´s of the Canon Scoopic and the Bolex H8 on this website or mail them to me? I was offered a Bolex H8 for almost nothing but I have no idea how this camera looks and if it is still a good camera for daily use.

Last question : where you still buy DS8mm films for a reasonable price? Are they only available in B/W or also in colour?

Don't confuse an H8 with a DS8. THey use totally different filmstock and lenses.

That said, you can probably find more regular8 (for the H8) film RIGHT NOW than DS8. That will all change soon, hopefully.

I'd grab another H8. Cool little cams, have their place, but not an "everyday" can, IMHO. No light meter, no motor, cumbersome and heavy.

if you dont have a a ds8 camera yet then perhaps you could use paul's service and then reload that stock into the reloadable s-8 cartridges.
youud need to slit in darknees ofcourse, but should work.
as for the ds8 cams, jaako at meritex still converts h-8 regular-8 (standard-8) to ds8 or keep watching ebay., etc. for canon, bolex, pathe or try that russian company who produces and sells slittters, reloadable cartridges and their own ds8 cameras. their cameras look snazzzzy so worhth looking into.
ive been shoooting ds8 for 4 years now and have been extremely pleased.
almost prefer it over regular-8, perrhaps paul's machine will change that.

Those Russians only run 25ft of DS8, though, right?

Correct. Can be an advantage though since they are small and light
