Home Movies

Post by anthony »

Hi

I was just wanting to know does anyone use Super 8 for primarily taking home movies or are the majority of users using it for strictly film making purposes

I use super8 for both things, as well as DV.

Super8 is really good for home movies, it really catches the feeling of the moment when projected on the big screen and its inherent limitations force you to be creative in a different way of "I-shoot-everything-now-and-will-edit-later-on-the-computer" DV style... projecting sound-stripped super8 is really magic. A true cinema at home!

For my video bussines I use strictly DV. It's cheap, gives decent video quality for broadcasting, it's very versatile and pay my bills

I shoot s8 mostly for home movies. I made a decision a couple of years ago to shoot a roll of something at family events, barbecues, hikes, bike trips, etc. Whenever I have friends over they inevitably ask to see some of my movies, no matter how mundane the topic of the films may be. For some reason, they never ask to see any of my videos....

And though many of the active members of this board are pros and shoot some pretty amazing stuff for paying clients, I'll bet they shoot a roll or two at their kid's birthday parties, too :D

As well as my experiments little films if I'm ever going somewhere special or doing anything intersedting I alwats take the S8 cam with me. I really enjoy getting a 3 and a half or 2 and a half minute document of what happened... just editing in camera... coming from a time when before I used a digital still cam and before that rolls and rolls of cheap cheap 35mm film, it's taught me so much to get quality rather than quantity.....

As such I don't do home movies in terms of 'baby on the lawn' or 'family day out' etc but I do film topical events. Topicals are mostly recorded on DV unless there may be some more historical note-worthy aspect to an event then it's super 8. The main reasons are that film is more resiliant in storage and that filmed material of events is rare these days so in the future the footage will have a more significant value in terms of history or just money.

I mainly use super 8 for music videoes, short films etc.

I did, however, recently shoot some "home movie" when I was travelling 'round in the south of Africa. Along with approx. 10 hours of DV footage I shot 6 rolls of super 8. But allthough I brought lots of film I found that on most occasions I preferred just letting the DV-camera roll.

I know sit with the home movie footage, trying to make it into an hour or so (for family viewing). I will spice it up with some of the super 8 footage.

I will also be able to use the film footage in my projects (which was also the original intention for it).

Cheers,

I shoot short films. As close to home movies are when I shoot off a roll
to experiment with a stock or particular lighting situation. HOWEVER, I
have decided to shoot some home movies. I will shoot a roll this Xmas
(maybe two  ) and intercut it with the video for an artsy effect.

I'm also considering shooting 200 ft if I go on this roadtrip to Mexico
some friends are planning.

Home movies and proud of it! I have always shot at least some movies of my two sons as they grew up in various formats (R-8mm, S-8mm and 16mm). I made some serious movies of special family events like my parents 50th anniversary, family reunions etc. I have a big home movie project in the works now as my oldest son is getting married next May. I am going to transfer all the film I have of him from the day he was born until the present and produce a DVD to show at his wedding rehearsal dinner. It will be only the cream of the crop and should run between 15 and 30 minutes long. I bet there won't be a dry eye in the house. The very fact that I always insisted to shoot on film even if it meant I could only afford a few rolls, now has significant meaning to my family. If I had shot video, most of the precious images would either be lost now or the quality subpar as VHS of twenty years ago is dreadful. And that for me, is the real unspoken value in film. That is why I still shoot film today, and my mini DV camera gets little use. Long live home movies!

I like that quote.,..basically descibes all my hobbies/interests. However, I find I like to shoot clips of street scenes (anything that looks old and dated/slummy/etc), time lapse things like the sky, reflections, and basically anything that has to do with my more interesting travels (Like every time I go sailing...lots of opportunity for macro shots and angle of interesting forms). Lots of water shots in my oc-1 canoe in NorCal. Also shot a ton of footage of oc-6 outrigger canoes in Northern California race events and another decent amount of my travels in Tonga and Fiji...when the kids get older I plan to make a decent "home" production of that stuff interspliced with stills, etc). I wish I would shoot some skiing footage if I ever get up to Tahoe...not as good as Cypress (BC) but suitable.

That's it. Oh, I I enjoy shooting my kids as long as the set up is decent. I sort of like that Kodak 50's style so when we go to the beach or state fair, then the super 8 comes out. For birthdays I leave that to mini DV and minidiscam since it is too rushed usually. Though, I should try to shoot super 8 more when the occassion suits it.
