Timelapse day - Question for the participants! (only)

Post by Andreas Wideroe »

Just wondering how we should do this. Simon Baker (Vidwerk) will edit the official film which means the master/copy have to be sent back to me again for copying.

I think it probably is a better idea to just record all timelapses on DV tapes and return them to everyone now. Then, when Simon has finished his work he can upload the finished film to the ftp.filmshooting.com site so everyone can download it from there (and everyone can upload their films too!).

What do you think about this?

I would like to have my final copy into dvd, so if the official version in this site would be for example 720x576, MPEG2, bitrate ~>4000, it's fine with me!

Or maybe you or Simon could send dv copy from the official edit, afterwards for those who will wan't it. Ofcource these extra cost would also be covered?

Yes, ofcourse uploaded in DV format (720x576) so you can do whatever you like with it.

Then it's more than just fine for me ;-)

However the size of that file can be quite big ;-) 41 x 0,5min (after edit?) = 20min = HUGE or even more....

But i have fast connection and lot's of time ;-)

There are a number of things we can do. I like the idea of uploading a file of the final version, but this file could be quite large. I could also burn this file to CD-R, and mail it out to the participants. I was also thinking of mastering out to DVD at my work. We should probably start a poll to determine everyones needs and wants. Some people may prefer a miniDV copy and DVD. This way they can play it at home for family on their DVD players, as well as use the miniDV copy for digitizing into their systems (to create SVCD's at whatever settings they prefer) and travel to various festivals with it. What does everyone think?

You can have only abt. 4min in one cd, if it's in DV format!

Maybe we should make poll?

Hello Awand and Vidwerk,

For me the idea of uploading the "official" version is a good one.

That would be nice for me! But I´m also okay with everything else as long as I can get a DV-tape in my cold, sweaty fingers soon!

I´m dying for seeing the results of every participant finally!

BTW: I´ve planned to show the result on some filmfairs I´m attending with my company to show people what people do with Super-8 around the world and that it´s still alive! - If that´s okay for you guys....

Awhile back I made an SVCD of my 5 min. demo reel which only took up 50 MB. For this file size, I was amazed at the level of good quality. The real-time DVD burn at my work will give you 45 min. on a 4.7GB at the the best compression ratio.

Since the majority of people here have already sent in Mini Dv tapes with their film submissions, the least that we can do is to transfer the final edited film on to those tapes. One tape for the edited film, the other tape for the unedited footage. In addition to this, if some people also request a copy on DVD or want to download it from their computer, that sounds fine.

Hi,

Since I'm in NTSC land (USA) I guess PAL miniDV would be no use for me, so Andreas if you haven't recorded anyting on my miniDV tapes, please just leave them blank, and what's your Paypal address again?

I would love to have a DVD copy if somebody can do this (both the final edited version and everybody's films), and I like the idea of uploading it to the ftp.

I will accept the mini dv tapes I sent to be returned to me with all the raw footage (since they will be PAL I will have them transferred to NTSC for myself unless anyone volunteers to do it, still don't know where I'm going to get that done......).

As for Vidwerk's verison, I would like some kind of master. A DVD to play (AND MAKE COPIES OF) on a DVD player and computer would be good, better than a download. Forgive my ignorance, but are all DVD's the same in USA and Europe, or does this PAL / NTSC thing applies to DVD's also?

No problem with me.

Both of the tapes each of us sent in will be needed for the raw unedited footage. 27 participants multiplied by 3 mins. approx. = 80 mins.

I will most likely be able to make NTSC DVD's for everbody(PAL I'm not too sure of yet, I'll check.) However, I cannot handle the cost of this for everyone. Making a DVD of the raw footage as well, seems a bit much(we'll see).

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the PAL/NTSC rule still applies.

I can make real time DVD burns of the master edit (NTSC for sure) but we have decide if we want a DVD authoring menu. This will require more time.

PAL vs. NTSC DVDs

Post by tangent »

There are indeed both PAL and NTSC format DVDs.

In my experience though, this doesn't matter. My consumer RCA (aka US brand) DVD player will play PAL or NTSC format properly w/ no problem - it does the conversion automatically... I think this is common. I always burn PAL format SVCD because of the better specs...

Can't wait to see everyone's time lapse work - Wish I'd gotten onto this forum in time to participate!!

Take care -

all (afaik) pal dvd players play ntsc, but not quite vice versa. many ntsc players don't play pal discs. converting is trivial if your material originated on film or progressive video though -- tmpgenc handles is automatically. see the how to make svcd thread for more info.
